@andersem.bsky.social wrote a wonderful companion piece to our recent elevator video! It digs deeper into how elevator costs affect smaller apartments and explores even more ideas for reforming N America's elevator codes
Ever lived in a building with an elevator? I haven't. It wasn't until recently that I realized how unusual this is.

In most of the rich world, elevators aren't just for tall buildings in big cities. They're all over.

To be age-friendly & accessible, our society needs to change this. Here's how.
Video: Fixing North America’s Big Elevator Problem | Sightline Institute
Our bans on smaller elevators block accessible homes, and our insistence on unique standards drives up prices.

For such a complicated topic, he does an amazing job making it understandable, interesting, and relevant. You may become as elevator-pilled as I am....

This video draws heavily on research by @stephenjacobsmith.com and the Centre for Building in North America. There’s a ton in his report that I couldn’t fit into this story, so I highly encourage you to check it out: www.centerforbuilding.org/publication/...

NEW VIDEO: North America’s Elevator’s Problem

Elevators are absolutely essential to modern cities..... and it turns out North America kind of sucks at them. We partnered with @sightline.org to look into the many issues plaguing our elevator industry, and what it might take to fix it.
The United States has the fewest elevators in the rich world, with Canada only a bit ahead. We teamed up with @uytaelee.bsky.social of About Here Videos to investigate why, exactly, North America sucks at elevators.

I’ve been working on this video with HUB Cycling since last summer and I’m incredibly excited to share it with you soon! It looks at the growing divide in how cities approach bikeshare and scootershare, and the messy history of how we got to this point.

One of my first jobs growing up was helping my friend deliver the Langley Advance around our neighbourhood. Sort-of felt like a full-circle moment to be interviewed by them for this story!
We talked to two YouTube creators – Uytae Lee of About Here and Andrew Stainer – about how they're following the construction of the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain line.

Excited to share a new video I produced with Urbanarium on their Decoding Timber Towers competition, which challenged teams to design 8–20+ storey buildings out of wood!

Check it out here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ42...

Wow I LOVE the data visualization! It's cool how we landed on a similar idea for mapping the stations. I originally included a bunch of other features but thought it created too much clutter for something that ultimately just needed to show the difference in the size/quantity of both systems.

After decades of staying pretty much the same, Granville Island's infrastructure is decaying, with no internal funding mechanism to pay for all the upgrades.

Here's my story on how we got here, and why all options — including housing — seem to be on the table.

There's nothing in Metro Vancouver like Granville Island — but that's part of the problem in making changes to keep it financially viable.
