This is a great step forward. As a social worker I have been advising people for years to hide the fact that they're married, or in a relationship because being honest could cost them $300 a month, and PWD isn't much to start with.

But it does need to go WAY further...short🧵
DROP THE PHONE. FORGET EVERYTHING. THIS IS HUGE.

I have called spousal clawbacks legislated poverty for years.

So many will be able to seek gainful employment, come out from illegal rental units, can get married and file taxes together, and more!

I'm crying on the inside for my PWD friends.

Canada failed to be who it claims to be these last five years and Poilievre is campaigning on the corpses for his closing argument
Poilievre's actual announcement today:

he'd amend the Criminal Code to give police power to charge people for living in a homeless encampment or a tent city

He said these are places where "half-dead, contorted bodies lie on the ground on the verge of overdose from fentanyl"

Compassionate!! /s
Watching Pierre Poilievre’s press conference in Hamilton right now, and his speech has devoted extended amounts of time to repeating two debunked claims:

1) that the Liberal platform was written for Trudeau (it wasn’t, Janyce McGregor already fact checked this)

How telling, tragic and not at all surprising this focus on a shooter's gender the anomalous time they are not cis male.

The right & far-right politicians, pundits & influencers attacking trans folks over the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge come from a movement that has hated & harmed communities around BC with impunity for years.

Other politicians posting condolences today have been silent on that hate.

As an ethics professor I used to use questions like “can we agree genocide is bad?” or “it’s wrong to put certain races into concentration camps, right?” without controversy. Now it’s controversial and students drop the course
"should the government kidnap 5 year olds and deport them? We asked seventeen ethics professors and they all just screamed"

Extremes do not need majority support to gain power in winner-take-all systems. They just need to capture one party.

Proportional representation changes that incentive structure and reduces the payoff of takeover politics.

I'm often surprised by how tempted we in North America are in comparison to our European neighbours.
The French simply won't stand for this kind of nonsense and neither should we!

Glad to see @rob-for-ndp-leader.bsky.social speaking clearly about what voters already know.

When Parliament does not reflect how people vote, democracy suffers.

Proportional representation is the fix.

Oh no the imbecile god-king, the viziers, the astrologers, the enslavers, they all joined a pedophile cult, per newly uncovered cuneiform tablets. Nevertheless, our divine entrails-readers prophesy our god-king shall reign forever
Terminal decline in other empires gets framed as: elites were unresponsive to critical needs of the lower classes.

But you rarely get specifics on how that stupidity worked. Like oh no the god-kings of Uruk burned down the grain storehouses to amuse some guy teaching chickens to read cuneiform!

Paid leave did not happen by accident.

Countries with proportional representation are more likely to pass worker friendly policies because governments must earn broad support, not just win a few swing ridings.

Systems shape outcomes.
