The Guardian’s article on my book.

“Elaborate yet accessible…Future of Denial is an eloquent, forthright text about the realities of the crisis and where it’s heading.”

www.theguardian.com/environment/...
‘What if there just is no solution?’ How we are all in denial about the climate crisis
In his new book, Tad DeLay suggests there is no rosy roadmap to go forward – but there are things we can do

I’ll continue to hammer this point but it frankly could be worse. If he admits/brags about it, a LOT of people will respect him more! Shows how honest he is, how “he tells it like it is” “he’s just like me”. And times like these are what pro-life is for (“Dems don’t care about kids, they kill them”)
I think if trump acknowledged he was implicated on some Epstein list, or if he straight up admitted he was a pedophile, his base would mostly get over it quickly, within a few days
Long ago, I lost a ministry job because I didn’t think it was wrong to be gay. The minister who fired me later went to prison for sexually assaulting a kid. The evangelical congregation was far more forgiving of him than my heresy. That shapes how I read this Trump-Epstein cover up

Oh no the imbecile god-king, the viziers, the astrologers, the enslavers, they all joined a pedophile cult, per newly uncovered cuneiform tablets. Nevertheless, our divine entrails-readers prophesy our god-king shall reign forever
Terminal decline in other empires gets framed as: elites were unresponsive to critical needs of the lower classes.

But you rarely get specifics on how that stupidity worked. Like oh no the god-kings of Uruk burned down the grain storehouses to amuse some guy teaching chickens to read cuneiform!

I almost wish people’s political commitments were such that we could say “you are beyond hope” or “beyond moral recovery” at a certain tolerance for (or enjoyment of) evil. The frustrating truth is that almost anyone can convert at any point, because people usually don’t care what they believe.

“Much of this new capacity will be devoted to the vast electricity needs of AI, with a third of the 252 gigawatts of gas power in development set to be situated on site at datacenters.”

I know there’s literature showing political ideology transfers from parent to child 80-90% but I’d be interested in seeing if that’s different in the long term for MAGA
i love that rightwingers genuinely seem to believe that political ideology is a set genetic inheritable trait

My college’s union sent out these guidelines after ICE raids on other Michigan campuses. Glad we are handling it proactively.

It’s infuriating that educators and students, doing actually beneficial work, have to navigate around the secret police.

So uh, without me bringing it up, a lot of my students are asking questions about fascism and secret police this week
I see a lot of people grappling with what fascism is, and there’s always a debate about features, whether there’s a coherent ideology or necessary material conditions. But if you are looking for a useable definition of fascism, Paxton’s (Anatomy of Fascism) is short enough to memorize

I picked a hell of a week to start reading Bevins The Jakarta Method. I take a break from doomscrolling to read the long history of the US killing communists whenever they start feeding people or teaching them to read. Oh well

“Let’s don’t freeze frame adjudicate this” It’s not that they reject an interpretation of events. What fascists *consciously* reject is reality, or the implication that reality matters
BOVINO: He was in the scene actively impeding and assaulting law enforceme--

BASH: But he wasn't impeding. He was filming, which is a legal thing to do in the United States

BOVINO: Dana, let's not free frame adjudicate this now

To desire a job in ICE or border patrol, you must be a racist, thus prone to violence and reactive insecurity. It’s not like a military where recruits can believe noble lies about defense, all evidence to the contrary. No comparable cultural illusions for ICE/CBP. The fantasy is racial hygiene

I’ll add that many right wingers/evangelicals will gladly believe it deserved if their own kids or grandkids are sent to camps or murdered. They’ve been tutored in hatred against the good for years, cheering for BLM protestors to get run over, laughing at how their kids won’t talk to them, etc.
Another sad piece of evidence for @taddelay.bsky.social's thesis that evangelicals don't oppose state violence or brutality, they just want to be the ones doing it.

What do they think will happen if they keep teaching everyone how things work? Do they even think?

Not sure how to say this, but Gaza eroded Democrat’s moral credibility even to say it’s bad to send 2-5 years olds to concentration camps. Similar to “I don’t get how anyone can vote for a guy with 34 felonies”. Yes you can, I you believe genocide is the worst of all crimes

With so many of us watching the tremendous mobilizations in Minneapolis, culminating in the call to action against ICE today, I wanted to share some of what I have gathered from talking to comrades in Minneapolis over the past few weeks. A few things stood out:

I’ll check news for examples for my Ethics course and it’s like “ah yeah, people have different views on kidnapping kindergarteners and sending them to concentration camps.”
This guy went to work today, put a mask on, kidnapped a 5 year old child, and then used him as bait so both he and his father could be sent behind bars

The terrorism section sounds like they are watching for downwardly mobile workers angry about Gaza

If you work in the military it would be a good time to quit. They might put you in jail but that’s a risk you take in violence work. It can’t be more obvious that it’s wrong to attack Greenland because a stupid pedophile told you to. Come on

As not only anecdotal but also empirical evidence piles up on deleterious cognitive effects of LLMs in education, AI supporters are increasingly in an anti-empirical position dressed in a data costume. Like treating a horoscope as a “tool” students need to fit in at their job.
