For no reason:

There was a time I was seeking higher-paying jobs in public service, media, etc. I had a lot of nibbles, and at Christmas 2023, was offered a government job.

I was overcome with panic as I considered taking it. It was what I wanted. I could "feel" more important, make a bit more.

It occurs to me that if Trump's really in dementia then the past is super important, so if he starts hearing all this duplicitous talk from Epstein in emails, maybe the betrayal alarms ring and he freaks out a little more on that level too.

come for the monster-face grill, but stay for the row of rubber duckies.

[alt text: front of a highly customized white Jeep, perhaps, has "monstery" eyes reminiscent of a dragon or such, and a grill that looks like gnashing teeth; its dashboard, however, holds a display of about 15 rubber duckies]

Alright, it’s that time of year where I ask for your favourite sci-fi and/or fantasy books of the past year written not by white men.

Every year I give my husband a bunch of these books for Xmas. I wish I had kept a list because we are approaching 10 years of this tradition.

This your idea of city council solution-making, @mikeklassen.bsky.social?

Come on. Shame on you guys.

I'm no expert but feels to me like the explicit purpose of international law is to avoid a situation where individual countries decide if their own conduct against other countries is correct

Only once in the previous Solar Cycle (some 13 years ago) did I capture the #Aurora in the due east sky off the Otago coast. but certainly not with dusk still glowing in the south (right) and certainly not this colourful.

At some point we need a national conversation about why so many Canadian mayor are so bluntly bad.
Ken Sim's austerity budget is so severe that they're going to be REMOVING EXISTING BABY CHANGING TABLES

Vancouver, is this really who we are?
Listening to Vancouver Council budget discussion in the background this morning. In response to a question from @seanorr.bsky.social about where they'll be retracting from the city just said they're planning to REMOVE baby changing tables and menstrual product dispensers to save costs. Shameful.

holy shit, this is great. finally. no employer "sick" notes for the first TWO 5-day sick periods per year here in BC.

this has always been an egregious waste of our human resources.

so proud of all the vancouverites turning up to shout down the proposed 0% property tax that's a gift to homeowners and a fuck-you to everyone else.

go, human decency!
Breaking up city council budget meeting. Speaker 47. Point grey home owner. Got rich with zero effort. Wants clean beaches, safe transit, libraries. Wants to see people of all incomes be able to enjoy. Doesn’t like power of police. View corridors, livable incomes, things are getting worse.

i'll be honest i find the epstien stuff similar to the "constitutional crisis" stuff. like, it just seems rooted in the wrong idea that there are actual mechanisms of accountability that will just automatically kick into effect if certain facts "come to light"

pretty sure only resistance does that

Speakers are getting a little hot under the collar and Mayor Ken Sim has had to caution them several times.

Harmon Moon just got cautioned for saying "Rather than taking governance seriously, you’ve already decided to go all-in with a bribe to property owners," which the mayor called defamatory.

The 0% property tax is an OBVIOUS ELECTION-YEAR PLOY, but it will backfire so fucking hard if it comes with cuts and increases to everything from swimming pools to parking.

I hope the city council gets its ass handed to it if this passes.
I'm dropping in to Vancouver city council today and can't live-skeet everything, but it's worth noting that there are currently over 600 speakers signed up to speak to the budget, which proposes finding $120 in savings to support a 0% property tax increase. #vanpoli
