Been getting more followers, so sharing this again. You're welcome to follow, you're welcome to lurk, my not following back means nothing. Also I have a near block on the ability to recognize people from one site to another unless they spell it out directly, it doesn't mean I don't value both of you
FYI its nothing personal if I don't follow you/follow you back, my brain has is fried and vetting people takes a lot of spoons. Even if I recognize you from somewhere else, I'm probably not going to follow until we've interacted so much I think I already have
Thread, also concerning shelters: I find it distressing that people will justify harsh measures saying people won't go into the shelters and not immediately ask what is wrong with the shelters that people would rather sleep in the rain than use them
hey man, i know you don't want to hear this, but:

if you want to "clean up" your parks you gotta get these people stable housing and income. for like 50% of homeless people a few thousand dollars worth of well-targeted resources is enough to get them "back on their feet."
"The longer visible signs of social decay are allowed to fester, the more inclined those with means will be to simply check out ... leaving those without the ability to relocate to deal with playgrounds littered with drug paraphernalia." www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

i'm not trying to shame you into being an altruistic do-gooder here. a bunch of *rational and humane* self-interest will probably be enough.

give people a life that's better than sleeping in the park and they won't sleep in the park.

Here, listen: when the President calls a female journalist “piggy” in a scrum, maybe you planned on asking about the economy, or whatever… But the story is now “the President called a female journalist piggy.” You asking a follow-up isn’t just defending her, it’s following the story.
while I’m being cranky, access journalism needs to go. When the president does his “I’m alpha because I insulted you” thing somebody needs to fall on his sword and say “what the fuck is wrong with you, old man?” on a hot mic. the hero of the wizard of Oz is Toto.

Plus it only spoonfeeds you the answer to one question. Most of the time when I look up a fact, I get both practice in how to do so efficiently and at least one useful new resource for the future that gives me more than just whatbI asked about
It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

Short thread
Well this 2,600-year-old clay letter was a journey.

It comes from the archive of a goldsmith named Nabû-zeru-iddin in the heart of ancient Assyria. We’ve got someone left on read, a lawsuit, a mean step-mom, and people who get drunk and steal silver.

Thread, nonsense like this is why I'm not putting anything interactive on my site, even though it started to practice my web design & it could be good to know. Matter of time before they decide a signable guestbook is a forum
I have a fun hypothetical for the technical among us! (For certain values of fun, heh.) The scenario: You run a website. It doesn't have a mobile app: the only way to access it is in-browser. You are deeply, morally opposed to any form of invasive tracking or data-gathering on your users.

An accident is when I stub my toe. We didn't "accidentally" invade Mexico. We acted willfully and with reckless disregard for the border we claim to care so much about
The US accidentally invaded Mexico on Monday, storming a beach and planting DoD “restricted area” signs claiming the land for “the commander,” triggering a standoff w/ armed Mexican security forces, all because Trump’s government can’t even identify a border on a map

Warning signs appear on Mexican beach declaring area restricted by U.S. as Mexico rejects Trump offer to strike cartels
The signs read in English and Spanish, "Warning: Restricted Area," and had been declared restricted by "the commander."
