Ah, hadn't quite merged the suggestion to try different distros out with the knowledge many can boot from a thumb drive. So no harm done if I try out the thumb drive then install it directly on the laptop if I like it?

Mostly use it for basic internet (tumblr, flight rising, a little twitch & youtube, various mostly text sites) and some fairly basic web design (I need to be able to edit my html & css files in a notepad equivalent and move my files around as I see fit). Stabilty & ease are my priorities for now.
