In which a top US Border Patrol official, incredibly, tells my tall and Anglo colleague @chipmitchell1.bsky.social that he's not the type they're looking for as they go about downtown Chicago arresting people based on "how they look"

I'm gutted and furious that the Iranian people will be injured, harmed and killed as a result of this absolutely depraved act of violence. What a complete travesty on every single level.

The punishment for throwing a brick at a deputy is not summary execution in the street, and this man should removed from his position. He is not qualified to enforce the law in a Constitutional democracy.
“If you throw a brick at one of our deputies we’re gonna be notifying your family of where to collect your remains because we will kill you, graveyard dead, we’re not gonna play.”

- the Brevard County Sheriff, in a live press conference.

These guys are foaming at the mouth to go full brownshirts.

Melissa Hortman, who was assassinated last night, was the Speaker of the Minnesota House in the 2023-2024 session, when Democrats ran the state government.

That means she had a leading role in shepherding the many landmark reforms that Dems adopted in that period—an important legacy. Brief 🧵.

What’s wild about the current political use of “antisemitism” (as opposed to its actual instances) is it has nothing to do with Jewish people at all. So much so that an Italian sexual harasser can wield it against a Muslim who is endorsed by a Jewish candidate. It’s just all nonsense.

yep. a common form of wishful thinking seems to be that 'good cops' (or perhaps 'good soldiers') will protect liberals from fash. in reality, actually-existing police have been instrumental political actors in the rise of fascism
Those cops have been chomping at the bit to arrest a democratic senator for years. They will purge every Democrat in congress the moment they get the chance.

NLG Chicago just released a brief statement. They're estimating 15 people have been arrested tonight. Volunteers will track them through the system and report releases.

Jail support has been mobilized (note: Chicago also has a permanent JS crew stationed outside Cook County Jail year round).

It’s almost as if effective advocacy and leadership, whether for good or evil, can shape public opinion, and it’s possible to work to frame issues instead of passively responding to the way the opposition frames them and accepting their characterization of what is “moderate.”
Rare for a public poll, we did a survey experiment to test whether priming respondents about the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia impacts support for Trump's broader immigration agenda. It does. Support for blanket deportations fell 20 points after hearing about Garcia's case.
