My latest: Move over bat tunnel, here’s the wild story of how HS2 were forced to build a multi-million pound bridge for a road that… doesn’t actually exist.
How HS2 built a bridge to nowhere
A state-of-the-art road bridge has been built deep in the heart of rural Buckinghamshire. Designed to carry traffic over the HS2 railway, there's just one tiny problem - there's no actual road.

Absolutely none of this makes sense. The experience of her refugee parents taught her to be anti-immigrant? The post-war order was built on the assumption of human niceness?
Katie Lam tries to explain to the Sunday Times how her grandparents experience under Nazism informs her view that the postwar institutions forged after the horrors of war, dictatorship & the holicaust won't now work in our times - because "they assume everyone would want to be nice to each other"

The official data on productivity shows Britain's big cities have decoupled from the national economy. But while the big cities outside the capital are roaring ahead, London is stagnating.

But can we trust this data? Are our regional divides closing? Our new paper investigates:

I dont think there's been a worse government decision in terms of sheer immediate injustice, time-wasting, overreach for quite a while in the UK. lots that had *longer term* implications but this has been a shameful disaster.

Leaving aside points around racism. Every single one of my female friends and relatives have dealt with unwanted sexual advances, up to and including sexual assault. Several have been victims of domestic violence. Multiple have been raped. Sexual violence is a daily occurrence and needs addressing.
Let's be more blunt, if I had a nickel for every time I've been told a man on the right who posts aggressively about grooming gangs is "not safe in taxis", well, I'd have more than two nickels.
if I ever go properly "screaming about nothing in particular in the street" mad it will be due to having spent too much time having read about the opinions of men who have absolutely never cared about women's rights for one moment in their lives but decided to pretend just for the sake of racism

One of the unintentionally impressive things about LLMs is that by dint of huge technical innovation, massive compute costs, and quite a lot of stolen data, they’ve managed to make computers bad at maths.

Violent or destructive left wing protest is framed as delegitimising the protesters' stated cause.

Violent or destructive right wing protest is framed as emphasing the need for urgent action on the protesters' stated cause.

As always, right wing men are treated as elemental forces without agency.
This is a bit of a atretch/hope: there were 5 protests, with the largest two being up to 300 people, a total of around a thousand or so people.

The stranger danger panic has convinced a whole lot of people that rapists are never people you know.

And they interpret that to mean that, if they know someone—personally or parasocially—that they must be innocent.

No matter how many victims come forward.

I think this is one of the biggest challenges in researching sexual violence.

Our cultural narratives about sexual violence are in such sharp opposition to reality that people really struggle to believe reality.
it’s impossible to talk about epstein stuff without sounding insane, even if what you’re saying is true
