Did you know? Less bad + more good = better.

Yes - we do need to focus on reducing harm and violence.

AND we need to explicitly define what’s good, what it thrives on, and how to get more of it. Both.

It’s not Pollyanna to tell good stories. It’s necessary.

So! Here’s a 🧵of what’s good.

OpenAI is a social arsonist - as Dr. Chris Gilliard reminds us - and the company's attempts to capture education with its "free" version of ChatGPT for teachers should, IMO, be met with vocal resistance and refusal if we as educators are to care for our students, their communities, and our planet.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

The destruction of US science will be felt worldwide for decades. Take it from @msier.bsky.social, who was the lead program director for the Biological Oceanography program at the US National Science Foundation.
I don’t think people understand how wrecked it is or how hard it will be to rebuild.

I've been saying for months that the institutions bending to the loser tyrant's will have been complicit rather than cowardly. People keep saying 'why not both?' and I need to say that this misreads the situation which is that many of these institutions ARE CORRUPT, lol.

As someone who started doing youth work over 20 years ago it's heartening to see reports like this but it's also infuriating because we've been beating this drum for my entire life. I'm 42. There is no time in my life that we did not know this. Never.
The safest communities are the ones with the most resources, not the most police.

Local leaders in DC need to invest in real safety solutions that reach people with the resources they need when they need them most.
To prevent DC crime, ACLU report recommends more funding for youth programs - WTOP News
D.C. leaders should invest more funding in youth and reentry programs to prevent crime, according to a report from the American Civil Liberties Union.

essentially every social program returns more to the economy than it costs, if it doesn't waste money on means-testing (which often costs more than the programs!)

and that's why there's no such thing as a "fiscal conservative"

they don't exist!
Medicare for All would save $450B a year.

Every dollar spent on food stamps generates $1.50-$1.80 in economic activity.

Each dollar going to low-wage workers adds $1.20 to the economy overall.

It’s not about what this country can or can’t afford.

It’s about priorities.

KEEP SHARING YOUR STORIES about increased ACA premiums due to the disappearance of subsidies. The stories clearly are having an impact, they help people feel less helpless, and they create solidarity that leads to action.

Mine went from $395→ $821. What happened for you?

Academia is a really racist and sexist place. Larry Summers, as the president of Harvard, epitomized that racism and sexism but he is not unique. That's why we needed DEI.

it is almost as if accommodating and conceding to far right ideas legitimizes them and signals to voters that the far right is a legitimate choice for governance
The Danish Social Democrats are currently on course for their worst election result since at least the Second World War, despite their brand of far-right accommodationism being touted as a blueprint for other centre-left parties.
