If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Non-oligarch owned journalism still alive and well at the @inquirer.com
The Epstein emails didn't expose a nostalgic "lost New York" so much as the utter moral rot of a U.S. ruling patriarchy that could never get enough money...or teenaged girls

My new column on the midnight of elites, how #MeToo didn't go far enough...and pitchforks www.inquirer.com/opinion/epst...
Epstein’s emails are the end of America as they ruined it
If the evil banality of the world's most powerful people exposed in the Epstein emails doesn't cause a revolution, nothing will.

I agree. The narrative explanation for declining trust has become ‘political polarisation’ rather than ‘lying is now the norm’ which massively limits opportunities for adaptation and resilience to manipulation.

The thing that takes this to the next level is that you (obviously) couldn’t script it or fake it if you tried.
Shooting our videos is a little bit different now.

one of the stranger phenomena in American life is that hate is supposed to flow in one direction (rural people get to hate urban people, Republicans get to hate Democrats) and if the hate goes the other way people pretend as if this is very upsetting.
The media made a HUGE deal out of "basket of deplorables" and "cling to their guns or religion."

But, of course, it will totally ignore Trump saying he hates Democrats: "I hate them. I believe they hate their country."
in addition to his "shylocks" comment, i can't imagine the media backlash if Biden said anything like from this screenshot - that he "hates Republicans" - and i'm also tired of having this "IMAGINE IF BIDEN!" thought experiment but it's just a constant reminder of the double standards

it’s absurd that NYT forced him to delete these skeets, which … convey the factual information that Zohran Mamdani is, in fact, a man of South Asian descent who was born and raised in Africa, and that the pseudonymous source of the hacked material is a white supremacist eugenicist.

weird that jamelle pointing out that the reporters didn't do their due diligence and were platforming a eugenicist violates social media standards
I deleted several posts about a Times story because they violated Times social media standards.

Lot of obvious dunks on this if you’re gonna call out supposed “wins” why rank no tax on tips as number 1 and not even talk about the millions of people who will lose healthcare or tax cuts for the rich? To MAGA, those are “wins”. Why avoid talking about them?
"Trump is at the top of his game right now," says our Capitol bureau chief and senior Washington columnist Rachael Bade.

Confused by the "endless political capital" characterization from this Politico piece! Our most recent Trump approval rating was at the 100-day mark, and, as we wrote then, it was "lower than any president in at least seven decades."

I find the big ones especially confusing.

Like, the event above involved hundreds of clergy rallying with senators on the Capitol steps. There were speeches. Bishop Budde was there.

Big event. Easy access to lawmakers for interviews. Visuals.

And there were like 2, maybe 3 other reporters.

Just heard Bill Kristol, former chief of staff for Dan Quayle, say he thinks ICE should be defunded and that the entire DHS should probably be disbanded, which puts him to the left of maybe the majority of elected Democrats. Truly wild times we’re living in.

I tend to ask folks what pronouns or terms I should use for them. Linguistically, it puts the onus on me and my behavior, which is really what I'm asking -- how do I respect you when speaking to or about you -- rather than a demand that they share a sometimes very personal truth about themselves.

Cannot understand support for this “If the Republican budget passes, a lot of Americans will indeed suffer. But so too will millions of noncitizens who came to the U.S. seeking better lives for themselves and their families.”
Given the likelihood that ICE will soon see a massive boost in its budget, I figured I’d document what it’s doing to the country with the money it has. Gift link: wapo.st/4lv53Wh
Opinion | This is what ICE is doing with the tax dollars you already provide it
Immigration and Customs Enforcement stands to see a sharp increase in its funding under the Republican budget bill.

In his video, Obama called dismantling USAID "a colossal mistake."

But the only people who were allowed to see the video were the people who just got fired from USAID.

And I think they already know.

Here’s a test: Every time someone says, “AI can replace X,” consider how you currently feel about Interactive Voice Response systems where you can’t reach a human operator.
AI turns substantive relationships into flattened transactions. it replaces faces for masks, substance for simulacra. if you want monuments, but you're too cheap to build anything, you make potemkin villages & cynically challenge people to explain the difference between a home and sheets of plywood.
