“Good read?” I yelp, the book slamming shut in my lap, as Cyrus appears across the sunwater pond. He’s dressed only in shorts and sneakers and looks absolutely out-of-place in the frost-laden forest. “Why are you so quiet? And where are your clothes?” I pull my scarf tighter around my neck while he squats down with cupped hands to scoop up some sunwater. “Never understood why people dress for winter when they all have aerojumpers,” he says between slurps. “It would just feel weird to be in shorts. Besides, what if your jumper malfunctions?” “I think I could make it to the nearest gate before I froze.” He swabs his mouth on his shoulder, the gleam of the wet smear faintly different from the sheen of sweat across his chest and stomach. Not that I’m looking. The moonlight catches it. “Anyway,” he says, “I don’t do well with excess clothing or stuff. Finding this little pond here let me shed my canteen.” “Well, this is kind of a special spot of mine.” I stand, the book hugged against my chest, and challenge him with my eyes. “So if you wouldn’t mind, don’t ruin it.” His mouth pulls to the side, like someone who just figured out the punch line to a joke. “And what if it ruins me?” I squint. “What?” It annoys me to no end that this is all I can think to say, but Cyrus has an annoying habit of knocking me off balance.

I should have died when I was six. I suppose this is something that should make me feel better about my life. Something that should make every single moment special and meaningful. I should be thanking God I survived, and appreciating the life that was granted to me, because so many other people do die at the age of six. Their deaths are tragedies. They make the paper. People read the stories and silently think to themselves, that will never happen to my children. But it happens all the time. They die from dramatic yet mundane things: cancer, a car wreck, choking on a grape. Not me, though. I should have died because I am cursed.

Vashad himself knew this quite well and lived by that code. Twenty-five, in the prime of his life with a stature that might just make a giant jealous. No fruit was out of the reach of his arms, no stream too deep for his legs. Nature had gifted him strength, enough to be the envy of all in the hamlet he called home. Knowledge was at his disposal as well – quite a gift when an education was reserved for those of wealth in the cities. By all accounts, Vashad was a prized bull among whither goats, and he was all too aware of it. Not a single thing more could he, nor would he ask for. Another of his more unique attributes, one that made him stand out nearly as much as his height, was his red toned, brown skin. It was as if his parents sculpted him from clay – a perfect golem of a man. Of the roughly dozen families that filled the homes and worked the land in which he was born, only a handful shared his complexion and only his father was darker. A fact that made him a target of being othered by his fairer skinned peers as a child. A struggle he would endure until his body began the metamorphosis into an adult. A calf on weak legs waseasy to topple, but as the bull grew his horns, the goats learned their place. Apprenticing for his father was no great chore either. Jakari was patient, kind, and forgiving – and arguably the most valuable man in the whole of Tanninide. Although the village was small – so small in fact that a temple hadn’t even been erected there – his father’s work as a metalsmith was invaluable. Tools were needed for every part of life and Jakari was the only one who could forge them properly. There wasn’t a metal in all of Inuju that the man couldn’t coax into shape and by studying under him, Vashad was made more special still.

The enemy came on with confident caution. Cerel drew breath. Smooth as ice. He let it out, releasing his THIRD arrow before the first of the Kudrum had dropped. The fourth turned in surprise. Before he had time to react further, he too fell dead. The silence vibrated, stunned for a moment by the resonance of the bowstring. Amazed, Virgil and Weatherlin stared into the white-laced darkness. Cerel remained frozen, arm outstretched, bow bent and arrow nocked, looking for more. An ethereal snow-dust settled. A third bottle was popped open, and another swig of harsh, burning liquor was slurped down. She hadn’t felt this broken or useless since the Blind Cliffs. But where she found strength in her anger then, she now only felt tired and depleted. She tried to think of that “happy place” Monty Kenko talked about and saw only an empty void. The same damned abyss that had been waiting for her ever since that awful day in Vigor. She fulfilled her destiny and had been waiting to die ever since. A dull growl rumbled through the palace. It sounded like thunder. Her head swayed upward toward the skylight where she saw only darkness. A storm was coming. Maybe the Fury God was angry with her? Isn’t that what Dinah-Celeste kept bothering her about? She should’ve been Ikari’s Champion according to her. “Then strike me down, asshole.”

We’re…study buddies.” Chloe exhales and searches the sky for the right words. “First off, if I had a neighbor who looked at me like that, I’d never get out of the house. Secondly, never use the term ‘study buddies’ henceforth. Thirdly, ‘study buddies’ definitely sounds like two people who are—” “Well, we’re not,” I say, swatting at her hands before she can make a lewd gesture. Chloe angles her head and makes her eyes large, as she usually does when she’s about to offer barely solicited, often shockingly incisive, advice. “Do not let the ghosts of assholes past cast doubt on the good guys of the present and future, Shinny.”

As the Third Daughter of Matron Amelica, she enjoyed limited privilege in her House, but she had gone out and made a name for herself as an artillerist with profound knowledge on how to shape stones and metals into versatile objects brimming with explosive magic—the kind that should be highly efficient against demons. Besides, because of the fragile relationship she had with her mother, Nitara believed Dijalka when she assured her that Matron Amelica would rather trap traitors in a mine to see if they could escape before the poison reached them than join them against the queen.

It is a school day and the mall is emptied of its usual teenage patronage. Now is the time for another species unique to the mall habitat; the dreaded mall walkers. They are a pack animal resplendent in their neon track pants. They cruise the climate controlled halls. These third space parasites buy nothing even though they have the financial weight of my entire senior class combined. If youth is wasted on the young then money is wasted on the old.

The blond’s eyes flicked around the room, from one silent spectator to the next. “I didn’t hit him that hard,” he protested. “He’s only stunned.” He nudged the dead man with the toe of his boot. “Dorne. This ain’t funny.” Dorne’s head lolled on his neck like a broken doll. “He’s fucking dead,” someone else exclaimed. “He’s not,” the victor insisted. “He’s just drunk. Dorne.” He nudged him again, harder. The third nudge was more of a solid kick. “Dorne!” he raged, as if it was Dorne’s fault he was dead.

Of course, this delicate balancing act might have worked beautifully, had it not been for Shorespine’s third great political faction: the Undead. It is important, at this juncture, to distinguish the Undead of Shorespine from their more bloodthirsty cousins in less regulated realities. The official classification was taxonomical—a tidy line drawn between Homo sapiens and those inconveniently still sapient, but no longer technically alive. Also imperative to note: none of Shorespine’s Undead were compelled to attack humanity by some sort of innate thirst for blood, or need to eat brains, or any of those other sordid myths the living told themselves, possibly as a form of projection. The Undead had autonomy, they had agency, which gave them a variety of different appetites, just like everyone else. They were free to choose, just like everyone else. Some chose violence. Others chose waffles. Just because they could grab someone and maul them or drain them dry didn’t mean they would. In short, they were people too, with their own hopes and dreams. Not always grand ones, but theirs all the same. And that, in Shorespine, was dangerous enough.

Some weird worldbuilding today! I don't believe I've ever explained how people pay rent in the Tenement yet... Very curious what y'all will make of this 😄

From #Tenement, my dystopian mystery about people living in an infinite building.
“Noah, go check the slot,” my father told me. “Make sure there’s not any last minute quids.” The slot he referred to was a small horizontal opening in the wall by our front door, sealed off by a tarnished metal plate on a creaky hinge; a lever was embedded in the wall beside it. I pushed the plate open with my fingers, feeling around in the hollow space inside. “Empty,” I said. “Give the lever a pull, just in case.” I did, and waited for the telltale clinking sound. But I got nothing. “Come on,” I sighed, and pulled it again. I don’t know why my father decided I should be the one to do this. The Tenement hated me. Kazuo would have probably had better luck. After the third pull, I heard a clackety-clackety-clack inside the slot. I pushed the plate open and scooped out four quids—colorful little glass balls about the size of my fingertips. Quids were the primary form of currency in the Tenement. Every apartment had a delivery slot just like ours, and throughout the month, quids would appear there, generated by the Tenement as a reward for our good behavior. At least, that was what we told ourselves. In reality, the distribution of quids was notoriously unpredictable. This was, of course, how we paid our rent, though what the Landlord did with all those quids we sent him each month, no one knew. My father and many others theorized that it had something do with keeping the water and electricity going. How exactly that worked was never explained, but it didn’t matter. All we knew was we had to keep doing it, month after month, and not ask questions. Pay the rent or die in the dark.
