The Notwithstanding Clause is something I've long called the ticking timebomb in the Canadian constitution.

And this is why. I've warned trans doomers in the US who advocate fleeing to countries like Canada that the fight is global.

This is the shape of things in Canada right now.

Yes, buy them, you will not be sorry! I will be dropping *everything* to read the fourth one when it releases.
What's this? A bundle sale on Itchio where you can get the first 3 books of THE REANIMATOR MYSTERIES SERIES for $6 (or for $2 each).
Grab them on sale while you can in preparation for the release of THE REANIMATOR'S FATE in January

As we learn more and more about the costs associated with GenAI, I continue to wonder how institutions and their leadership decide that yes, incorporating anything OpenAI produces into the lives of educators and students is worth the harms.
"In an internal memo from September, CEO Sam Altman said that OpenAI’s “audacious long-term goal is to build 250 gigawatts of capacity by 2033.” If Altman achieves this goal, OpenAI will need almost exactly as much electricity as India’s 1.5 billion people"

The Ecological Cost of AI Is Much Higher Than You Think - Truthdig
As the demands of AI grow, each generation of microchips requires more energy, minerals and water to produce, driving a ruinous cycle.

Looking at The Last Supper, the paintings & statues crawling over the walls & ceilings of cathedrals in Parma this month, I thought always of their human artists reaching through time, their inner worlds & effort suspended in art. & then of shitheads typing out a prompt to spew synthetic pap.

This should be required reading
Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

This is really good. A clearly written summary of the many harms caused by AI, with copious references.

What would happen if this shit collapsed? Some rich fucks would have to live slightly less delusionally privileged lives. The end. Let it fucking die.

“OpenAI in Danger”
Don’t threaten me with a good time!
“authors & publishers who filed a lawsuit against the Sam Altman-led firm have secured access to internal Slack messages… discussing the mass deletion of a pirated books dataset… A NY district court ordered OpenAI to hand over the communications regarding data deletion”

Reading a delightful supernatural mystery series, but by book 5 it gets hard not to roll my eyes every time the narrator says, “There is no WAY the dreams/unexplainable noises/feeling of being watched/strange weather can have anything to do with this case!”

My dude, you are supposed to be smart!

Guess who didn't bother to register the URL when she did that? What do you think Hot Girls for Cuomo dot com leads to now?... 😄 Enjoy.

The original printing of "The Lord of Ruthven Hall" is the first story I ever sold, and very much a love-letter to the Victorian Gothic. By way of murderous transmasc werewolves, because I know what I'm about.

This whole thread, but especially this!
The Luddites weren't anti-progress. They weren't anti-technology. They were pro worker rights. And it's convenient for the tech barons (in any age) to make us believe those are the same thing.
