If people become insecure, we find they’re three times more likely to desert Labour than if they become more concerned about immigration. Around one-third of Britons felt economically insecure as of April 2025.

Focusing on immigration is a ‘red herring’ when financial security is so foundational.

I mean the thing about trying to govern with no political ambitions is that your opponents can just project whatever they want onto it and there's nothing you can really do to stop them
The predictable crushing uniformity of the coverage of this Budget tells you an awful lot about the priorities of those papers, and also why there's actually quite a lot to praise in it bylinetimes.com/2025/11/26/t...

we’re about to see if “left on economics, conservative on social policy” is in any way electorally viable - we’ve had a varying cast of people claiming for close to 17 years that this was the silver bullet to assure Labour success

Bit of a test case here for “is liberalism still a real thing, or is it just a political version of a collection of Labubus that you show off to your friends” IMO.

Now to take a big sip of my hot drink and check who reinstated him onto the Labour Party
I read “It is hard to imagine that taking place in Britain” initially as “thank goodness”. Then I realised that Phillips *wants* this for Britain! He wants a Britain where visible minorities live in fear of abduction and deportation? WTAF?
Just a jaw-dropping paragraph in Trevor Phillips's column for The Times.

This is a policy that, by his own account, has left parents of a particular race too frightened to walk their children to school.

And that's the example he chooses of the "vigour" we "need".

Covid inquiry live updates: UK did 'too little, too late', leading to thousands more Covid deaths, says inquiry
The inquiry says an earlier lockdown could have saved 23,000 lives in the first wave in England - and lockdown could have been avoided altogether with earlier interventions.

Btw about this from Lizza's reply: Olivia and I lived together for 4+ years (4 b'days, 4 Xmases, 4 anniversaries). That's like $1250 of jewelry per celebration. And her apartment was a writing studio. And I made an f-ton then. What was I supposed to do? Get her a lot of Gift Certificates from Kmart?

Antisemitism is a lot like Qanon child abuse conspiracies in that there’s this real and bad phenomenon and, parallel to that, what can only be described as a large scale mass psychosis about a mostly fictional version of the same phenomenon

Bluntly, it’s no coincidence that we have spent fifteen years screaming in mortal terror at the same groups of Asian sex offenders, throughout the whole period when our ruling class has been exposed as inveterate arse grabbers and sex criminals.

One of the biggest problems with the "means testing of everything" is it pushes the UK into the same zone as American attitudes towards public transit funding "services for the poor tend to be poor services"

You may not like it, but people like to see they get something back from the state
The UK just has incredible attention to detail when it comes to making sure the people who pay all the taxes can’t have nice things. Child benefit? No. Free Child car? No. Cut price bike to cycle to work? No.

Functionally we are telling people they pay too much tax to get anything from the state.

I guess it's obvious in retrospect but "it's stolen work" was less persuasive in turning public opinion against AI than everybody just seeing a ton of it constantly and getting sick of not being able to trust your eyes. Hey, that works too. Whatever it takes, really.

- the killings were unjustified
- none of the 14 dead (7 of whom were children) had guns
- no warnings were given
- no soldiers were under threat
- the troops were the first to open fire
