Every day from now until Christmas (if I remember), I'm going to post a really weird Christmas song here.

I'm going to start with this one, mostly because I like to imagine the parallel universe where J-pop is as big in the West as K-pop, and this gets played in supermarkets youtu.be/iHYKlPLQgS0

Today's newsletter: New piece: after the Guthrie kidnapping, the Kirk assassination, and both Minneapolis shootings, the same thing happened every time. People asked AI to "enhance" blurry footage. AI invented faces.

Computer, Enhance
People keep running crime footage through AI thinking they’re helping. They’re not.

I'm always surprised how empty the streets are in these old films. You think that in the pre-car era, the streets would be full of pedestrians and maybe bikes and horses, but there's just no-one out there.

I think ALL THE TIME about people who've never seen the sea. If you grew up in a tiny country like Britain it's difficult to imagine. However poor your family was, you'll have been dragged to a lovably shit seafront before you were 15.
I vastly envy folks who grew up near the ocean. I am 23 years old and have never seen the ocean. It's 1000 miles away.

So, an update on this guy: he's started his own political party to try to get back onto the council, and he needed to collect signatures to get on the ballot. Of the 183 signatures so far verified, 4 are dead and 29 deny signing the petition. www.hessenschau.de/politik/fran...

Something cool I just learned: You know how cars make a weird whirring sound when they reverse, but not going forward? It's because reverse uses straight toothed gears, while the other gears are helical. Helical teeth mesh smoothly - straight teeth hit each other head-on and vibrate a lot more.

idk how to rebuild society for this but i don't think people should be allowed to talk like this without it going very poorly for them
Fuentes, yesterday: “Our #1 political enemy is women because women constrain everything, every conversation, every man, everything. They have to be imprisoned. They are the ones that are hurting the fertility rate. They're the ones making us sympathetic to poor people, which are also brown people.”
Nick Fuentes: “The number one political enemy in America is women. … They have to be imprisoned.”

My column in this week's @newstatesman1913.bsky.social, on bad data used in bad faith.

FOI-ing the stats myself, I didn't find a great deal of difference in sex offending rates: 5 per 10,000 Afghan men, 7 per 10,000 UK men:

Agree with this, and I do also think it is elite-led, not a response to the 'ungovernable' voters.
i feel like. at some point elite awareness that policy trade-offs actually exist decayed

Increasingly coming to the conclusion that drones don't exist. You have never seen a drone. Everything you thought was a drone was just a balloon or a bird or a plane or a flying saucer
So the DOD started laser testing because they believed party balloons were drones, shut down all of El Paso airspace, and blamed it on Mexican cartels?

I'm ok with (or have made my peace with) a bit of editing after you've taken a photo, but the cameras that manipulate the image before even saving it cross a line imho

One of my more pessimistic beliefs is phone photos won't be acceptable as evidence in court by the end of the decade
This reminds me, I hate how common it is now to advertise phone cameras with features that defeat the point of a photo being to capture a specific moment in time
My number one hobby is ruining event’s “in the moment” photos by smiling directly at the camera
