There's an interesting #linguistics angle here: "Legal experts say " makes the statement sound more debatable, even though logically we should trust legal experts more than the journalist. Pragmatics is weird!
NEW: President Donald Trump says he is granting a pardon to Tina Peters, who was convicted on state charges related to tampering with Colorado's election systems. Legal experts say presidential pardons do not apply to state charges.

This "movie you've watched more than six times" thing is astounding to me. I don't think I've ever in my adult life watched a movie more than once. Where is everyone finding the time??

This poll is woefully incomplete: they didn't let Labour supporters vote against Labour! Do the pollsters not read the news?

Cygwin! 💚

It made it so easy, since it let me keep my fully functioning Windows system. It added without taking away.

Nowadays I'm a full-time Ubuntu user, but Cygwin was my gateway to Linux.

You never forget your first love.
28 years ago, I learned about this amazing thing called Linux.

I immediately drove down to Best Buy and bought a boxed set of Red Hat 5.0. Probably the best $50 I've ever spent!

What was your first Linux distro?

Two interesting things here:

1. In support of "everyone is 12" theory, she seems to believe that if her phrasing is clever enough, she can make grown adults believe that we've made zero progress since literal slavery times.

I've never seen so many bad pie takes on one day. I guess it's good that we're getting it out in the open, but honestly I don't see how we as a society move forward from this.

Why is everyone overlooking the obvious interpretation, that by "gay" he means "happy"?

Also because that was a creepy name to begin with.
They should change the name from "Homeland Security" because that's not their focus any more www.nytimes.com/2025/11/16/u...

Ugh, John Bolton messed up the wording on his Ezra Klein parody headline. How embarrassing!
He's not going to pardon you, John.

How are we supposed to pay for pony rides at Meijer now?

Maybe the flavoring isn't *artificial*, but "natural" seems like a stretch.

My neighbors have a welcome mat that says "All Are Welcome Here", and I just don't understand how they can be so cavalier about inviting in vampires.

Clearly I'm not jaded enough, because even after everything else, I find this detail to be absolutely chilling.
New incredible detail here: ICE says a match in its facial recognition app Mobile Fortify is a "definitive" determination of a person's status, and that this overrides birth certificates. This is an app ICE is using in the field to scan people

Next up: products that another country has a comparative advantage in producing.
BREAKING: The US is rolling back tariffs on “products that cannot be grown, mined, or naturally produced in the United States," per WSJ

Republicans: Calling us "fascists" is an incitement to violence.

Also Republicans: Trump is a monarch.
It is a scandal totally unprecedented in history that the Vice President has shared a video depicting the President as king. It’s an obscene violation of every founding American principle.

And nothing will come of it. It makes me physically sick.

This thread gets pretty wild. I think this person forgot there's a mute button?
lets say a wizard has cursed you with a lot of money. you are going to become permanently brain damaged simply by being in possession of so much money. the only way out of it is to spend a lot of money on something ridiculous and not at all useful

what would you buy to break the curse?

I still can't believe that, after two years, the hostages are all free! I tear up every time I think about it. 💛🎗️

I can't get over his notion that redistricting would "tear communities apart". Does he think they'll be building highways along the new district boundaries?
I believe that Trump, Mike Johnson and Greg Abbott should not have started this and continued with it in multiple states to rig the midterms. No Democrats want this, but we can’t unilaterally disarm in the face of multiple threats to fair representation nationwide.

I'm really starting to doubt the accuracy of those construction signs claiming that "motorcycles use extreme caution".

I mentioned to my father that I almost always keep my phone on silent.

Dad: How do you know when someone is calling you?
Me: Why would I need to know that?
my most unpopular opinion is that it's a sign of defective moral character if you point blank refuse to answer phone calls from unknown numbers. it's not that hard to hang up on spam/scammers, and you are probably missing important calls!

I'm a Millennial, and I lack the "cultural competency or comportment" to make it fifteen minutes into that movie.
It makes me sad GenZ probably lacks the cultural competency or comportment to understand or enjoy Napoleon Dynamite.

I can vouch — my Bukhari family pulls these out at weddings, and they are wonderful. They come in a variety of colors, and each has its own design. Many examples here: www.google.com/search?udm=2...
Along with everything else that's wrong here, I'm SUPER upset this is going to be a lot of people's first exposure to Bukharian jomahs. Which are actually pretty fab when they're worn where it's appropriate, and have a cool, but possibly apocryphal, origin.
You guys do yourself a favor and look at what Eric Adams wore to Rosh Hashanah services at the Sephardic Lebanese Congregation

Today in "two things can be true":
tired: Democrats need to align their views with a platform that can win a majority of Senators
inspired: if the Senate wasn't an institution that exists entirely to prop up rural bigotry, the country's government would already actually be aligned with its culture & not the 25 most regressive states
