The US National Climate Assessment is a national treasure. The authors are volunteers, & it was a career highlight for me to have been the Lead Author of the NCA6 Climate Mitigation Chapter. The career public servants who led my chapter & the overall NCA6 are heroes. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/28/c...
National Climate Assessment Authors Are Dismissed by Trump Administration
The Trump administration told researchers it was “releasing” them from their roles. It puts the future of the assessment, which is required by Congress, in doubt.

this is potentially a super nasty feedback mechanism because much of our petroleum industry is probably nonviable in a serious global depression, such as the one caused by our petroleum industry ceasing to be viable
WTI down 15% in two days, worst stretch since COVID and now testing $60/bbl. This is significantly below new well breakevens which are themselves rising thanks to tariff-driven inflation (especially pipe). Layoffs coming in size for rig crews.

🚨Judge Xinis orders the Trump administration to bring back Kilmar Abrego, the Maryland father who was deported to El Salvador, the one place it was outright illegal for the United States to deport him to.

Now the question of compliance comes up. How will the admin respond? How will Bukele respond?

SNAP is at risk.

Congress is considering cutting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program which helps nearly 42 million Americans put food on the table. Critics argue it's too costly, with spending at $100 billion in 2024.

Thankfully for D.C., we only have that one Albert Pike statue, but I wonder if they'll try to fortify it more so people won't take it down again like in 2020. Blustering blowhard never should have got one tbh

Republicans snuck a brutal blow to D.C. into their continuing resolution, attempting to defund our vital services midyear without warning. It would have a profoundly devastating, paralyzing impact on so many areas of life, especially public safety and education. It's a total shock and a nightmare.
The Continuing Resolution would require the District to immediately cut $1 billion from a local budget that is already balanced — forcing deep cuts to police, firefighters, trash collection, homelessness services, and schools. It hurts everyone's goal of a safer and stronger DC.
It's shaping up to be a *very bad week* for D.C. The draft congressional spending bill to avert a federal shutdown would force D.C. to trim $945 million from its current fiscal year budget, which would spark immediate cuts to programs and staff. From @murray.senate.gov:

I don't think there's ever been a clearer, cleaner case for D.C. statehood--I mean, besides, y'know, "democracy"--than the fact that the city has been forced by Republicans who don't live there to erase over its Black Lives Matter plaza. And it has no representatives to fight back.

There's been lots of debate on the left over the last 8 years about whether Trumpism qualifies as fascism or not, and I've never seen a semantic debate so handily settled
This is straight-up fascist dictatorship activity. Not fascist-adjacent or “reminiscent of authoritarian regimes” or whatever euphemistic bullshit — fascism.
UPDATE—Mahmoud's attorney says they do NOT know where he is.
They were first told he was sent to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. But when his 8-month-pregnant wife tried to visit him, she was told he's not there.
They've received reports he may be sent as far away as Louisiana.

There is a real, genuine 1st Amendment crisis in the United States right now.

The government is openly retaliating against anyone with a viewpoint it doesn't like: Pro-Palestinian protesters, law schools teaching Black History, pro-immigration public service loan forgiveness seekers.

Fifty-five years ago today, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons—which opened for signature on July 1, 1968—entered into force. Only four states have never been a party to it: India, Israel, Pakistan, and South Sudan. North Korea acceded in 1985 and withdrew in 2003.

Folks nobody who is in full compliance with IAEA safeguards is going to be capable of building a nuclear weapon on a timeframe less than 18 or so months, and that assumes going full overt breakout the instant you have enough raw and isolated (eg not spent normal fuel rods) special rocks on hand
