“Unless the House descends into chaos” possibility is increasing

Traditionally Rules was filled w/ supporters of the Speaker, but the crazies demanded they have enough members on Rules to tank stuff in exchange for backing Johnson (& McCarthy) as Speaker

We stay in a 6-bill shutdown if this fails

I remember a pretty good post from this era commenting that a lot of woke 1.0 people wanted to make sure a white guy who called someone a slur to never work again but violent criminals exist in a complicated social situation and it's unclear if punitive measures create even more harm or not
woke 1.0 loved social sanction but hated every other means of coercion, including the law. it was primarily a game people played online with others who had consented by their politics to participate, and its objective was extirpating the hidden seed of evil in the things in which it was latent.
because it feels like there’s whole swathes of people who feel like Woke 1.0 didn’t go far enough, and those two dynamics seem….at odds, but that might be a misreading by me.

I feel as though the existence and injustice of cash bail and its awful impacts (and police being police) really polarized leftists against one of America's better institutions. I'm not sure how to resolve that or if it's worth it given how bad certain parts of the justice system (plea bargains) are
imo of all the formal political institutions in US life, the judiciary has given the best account of itself by a pretty large margin (with the obvious exception of SCOTUS) and a younger me was way more dismissive of the courts than history would prove deserved
A magistrate judge found no probable cause to support arrest warrants for 5 people involved in the St. Paul church protest.

DOJ appealed to the 8th Cir.

That appeal led to this remarkable letter from the Chief Judge of the Minnesota district court…

the other thing that makes miller different than the rest of the top-level advisors and appointees is that all of the others hit the ceiling for their careers before these jobs, but miller doesn't even *have* a career without trump and both he and trump know it
miller is a personality type who could only attain power in donald trump's shadow, another singularly evil person. miller's a nobody under literally anyone else.

I don’t think any of us will be fully happy with the Democratic Party in our lifetimes simply because it has the unenviable task of managing a coalition which spans the entire political spectrum left of Franco. This is also why we’re stuck with it forever.

The current Democratic coalition is every single person who has any idea how society works, any interest in maintaining it, or any scraps of empathy for their fellow human beings, and that's about 47% of the country, tops.
People like to remark that the Democratic party spans from Rashida Tlaib to Bill Kristol at this point but the fact is that's a far too small coalition to reliably win nationally, lol.

No vote tonight on the funding deal because — and I am not making this up — Lindsey Graham was insisting on undoing this so he can personally enrich himself to the tune of millions in taxpayer dollars
Unanimous vote in the House to repeal provision letting Senators sue the US over the Jan 6 probe and get millions of dollars

Genuinely endearing how much the two chambers hate each other. A true Legolas/Gimli meme for House members against their true enemy, the Senate

I really have become convinced by the "It's All Content" theory of American politics. Everything the Administration does is about producing content. Arresting Don Lemon may seem like transparently clumsy authoritarianism which will backfire - but think of the likes they'll get! More content! More!

this is insane and absolutely validates Will's skepticism of 'opsec' in mass movements
I’m not totally sure how to address this but apparently I’m getting kicked out of ICE rapid response for the moment because I’m allowing press ridealongs, with an extremely strict condition that no other observer be identified. Lots of observers have allowed ridealongs and they benefit us.

six-year terms are a pretty serious design flaw even when not hastily strapped to a deliberately malapportioned minoritarian legislative death trap, it turns out
the senate being a sinecure for the laziest people in electoral politics remains an intractable problem that just looks even worse in the face of a fascist executive

Actually decent list of reasonable maximalist demands for senate dems
“Abolish” or “defund” aren't within grasp in 2026. But where are:

- End qualified immunity
- Rewrite use-of-force so this crap isn't ruled “within policy”
- Overturn July 8 mandatory detention memo
- Reinstate TPS
- Open up detention centers, enforce humane conditions

He doesn’t even *ask* for it.
Chuck Schumer just announced demands on DHS to avoid shutdown:
1. End roving patrols, tighten rules on warrants
2. Enforce accountability & unified code of conduct for agents
3. No more masks & require bodycams

There are *already* standards on much of this.

The issue is DHS isn't following them!

100% and to extend it more broadly Republicans are really good at breaking conventions (including bad ones, even if for the wrong reasons) while Democrats are really good at preserving them, including bad ones.
This is really a stupid debate, as the essential problem is the the GOP is really good at starting wars and the Democrats are really bad at ending them.

Bondi thinks she's going to win the propaganda war with this shit, but it's never been more clear that they're losing.
