They illegally blocked a best practices document the government commissioned from experts and then disregarded it.
Zero surprises that the brainless transphobic health minister in NZ ignored all expert advice and evidence and banned puberty blockers for trans youth. Literal blood on his hands.

The thing that makes me possibly the maddest is when adults have their bullshit moral panic bigotry about whatever issue and they start going after children first. They do it with fat kids, and brown kids, and trans kids. You exploitative harmful assholes, pick on someone your own size

Now would be a great time for Chris Hipkins and NZ Labour to commit to reversing these horrendous puberty blocker restrictions.

Time to show that they're not transphobic like their UK counterparts...

Yet another entry in the endless series: people who whine about council rates are outraged when service quality suffers from underfunding.

As a lifelong Wellington City resident I can't begin to describe how much it pisses me off that people who do not live here feel entitled to make this city a shitter place simply for their own convenience.

This is grimly amusing. Bishop couldn't fulfil a campaign promise because of Simeon Brown's footpath fatwa, so he had to raid a Kāinga Ora fund. Maybe running transport policy as a culture war was a stupid and destructive thing to do in the first place, eh.
NEW: Chris Bishop used housing money to fund a bridge in his electorate his own Govt had killed off.

Officials were against the move and Labour say he shouldn’t have been anywhere near the decision.

Officials warned against the use of housing funds for bridge building but Bishop says it was a “pragmatic choice”.

Remember that the $4billion road being rammed through Wellington is not for the benefit of Wellingtonians but instead for National Party ministers who hate this city and can't wait to leave it after a long term week at parliament destroying the economy and doing a bit of racism
Looking at the map at changes around my neighbourhood it looks like (because of a number of no right turns allowed) it will literally take me longer to get to the airport and longer get home from the city than it currently does. And even a little longer to ride my bike to the city.

I can confirm that this is absolutely impacting clinical care at Wellington Hospital. Less than a year after the government cut 1/3 of IT jobs...

Hospital management and the Minister have nothing to offer except "you can't reduce clinics too much" and "blame the last government"

this take gets annoying as a southerner. you should not give up on the south, but no, it is not red because of voter suppression or a lack of funding for dems. doug jones raised shitloads of money and lost. it is red because the overwhelming majority are extremely racist white conservatives
I understand why a lot of white liberals are like, fuck the south, because they think about the people in power who are mostly white conservatives. But that is only because of Jim Crow, voter suppression, a lack of real funding for Dems there

Exactly this.
Tory Whanau tried to break the stagnation to move the city forward, the loud homeowners engaged in a campaign of sabotage.
And now here we are, only a few weeks into Little's term, straight back to the sclerotic norm.
Some cities are actively pursuing growth. Others are stuck in a state of managed decline, merely cutting costs for loud existing homeowners while doing nothing to build for the future.

I'm increasingly worried that Wellington is irrevocably stuck in the second category.

Just a reminder that you don't hate journalistic institutions nearly enough.

I'm sure it's bad for democracy that journalism jobs are disappearing, but our currently existing journalists are not worth preserving.

Elite journalistic institutions are full of reporters and edited who just refuse to take sex crimes seriously (see also, all the NYT/Epstein stuff).

It's unsurprising that they're losing public trust. Unfortunately, these same people tend to circle the wagons instead of reflecting on the criticism
It bears remembering that this woman, according to the IPCA report, sent at least 36 emails to media outlets, presumaby including NZME, as well as the PM, Police Minister, and police command in Dec 2023 & Jan 2024, and they did fuck-all about it too

After Gina Haspel defied the Senate intelligence committee and destroyed the CIA’s torture tapes, they rewarded her by confirming her as director of the CIA a few years later. Absolute impunity.

Why should ICE expect any accountability for this? We gave that up decades ago and never looked back.
An interesting tidbit in the joint status report filed in the Broadview ICE facility case today:

ICE says video from inside the facility "between October 19, 2025, and October 31, 2025, has been irretrievably destroyed" and can't be produced in discovery.

I think a LOT of journalists have no idea how much credibility elite journalistic institutions have burned with the public in the last decade.

They'd do a lot better examining why that's the case instead of reflexively defending those institutions every time there's criticism...
