Today has been a day.
The steady flow of stories about men behaving appallingly and other men/institutions minimising, or denying, or actively covering for them make me ragey and sad.

Here's an iris from a neglected corner of my yard as a wee antidote.

If you look at the way women/NB folks are treated by men in every sphere - politics, media, police, health, it’s clear that misogyny is, as Kate Manne describes,"the law enforcement branch of the patriarchal order.”
Until men can say out loud that it’s deliberate, the headlines will stay the same.

Is it good when a major international news organization is actively soliciting stories about people leaving your country because the government has fucked it so hard?
Tell us: are you a New Zealander planning to leave the country?
We want to hear from people in New Zealand who have or are thinking of leaving

Bloody grim. Police in the years since seem to have treated John Dewar as a role model rather than a cautionary tale. Louise Nicholas all over again.

Just to be clear, this is what John Dewar has been up to since covering up sexual assault by 3 of his colleagues.

My favourite part - maybe housecleaning.

I'm often maybe housecleaning.
The thought is there, but I'm probably reading a book instead.

This IPCA report on McSkimming and enabler/s needs a major systemic review of police command staff and systems to result. How deep does the rot go?Is just making up breathalysers results by lower level police a downstream reflection of the culture? New Zealand needs answers, not soundbites.

Oh no. Vancouver has been leading the way. This would be a huge step in the wrong direction.
Incredibly short-sighted and irresponsible, and completely disconnected from the real values & priorities of Vancouverites. This move would be awful not only for Vancouver, but also for all the cities that Vancouver’s leadership has inspired over decades of North American sustainability leadership.

My post about the Shire and Tolkien has broken containment.
I reread LOtR (twice!) this year and it really hits differently in these times. He was a WW1 veteran, writing in the shadow of the 2nd world war and his experiences infuse the books.
I guess I'm not alone in seeing parallels.

It cost Casey Costello $4500 to hire a room to meet with Irish anti-trans activist Helen Joyce. $1000 for a council social event to unveil a painting is peanuts & much more positive bc it involves sthg tangible (painting) & supports a local artist.

There are many ways to do that, from #completestreets to #sharedstreets, pedestrian priority streets & Dutch #woonerfs, that prioritize streets for people, not cars.
