My sister's neighbour took his dog, the snuggly black lab, and her dog Hazy, on the floor being a bit concerned about Santa, for a Christmas photo today.

Even there, Luxon’s diplomatic coup was simply being shorter and balder than the president.’ Luxon’s “hands-free” leadership style has enabled his coalition partners to pursue divisive and extremist policies, allowing him to be relentlessly focussed on securing the next selfie.’ And the kicker: ‘In a work dominated by personality politics, he is at a distinct disadvantage in not having one.’

Things may be fucked up and stupid, but I just saw a bat-eared fox drinking on the live stream of the Namib desert watering hole. I didn't know such a creature existed and had to do a hasty bit of research. Exciting!

The polling is another argument for keeping him. Much as the media likes to suggest that next year's election is a tight race, it really isn't. Level pegging in a year when all of the public focus is on the failings of the current government must be a quietly acceptable place for National to be in. As we saw in Australia, the political landscape changes in an election year, once the focus shifts from how bad the current government is, to how scary the alternative (a Labour/Greens/TPM coalition) can be made to look. To have a reasonable chance of an election victory next year, the centre-left bloc would (a) need to be between 5 and 10 points in front once the campaign starts, and would also (b) need the public resentment of the coalition government to be increasing. Instead, the polls are almost as deadlocked now as they were six months ago. The centre-left isn't recruiting the disenchanted, not in anything like the numbers needed to win next year.

The language Peters used is highly inflammatory, and pretty rich coming from a man whose attacks on Benjamin Doyle launched a wave of threats so serious that Doyle felt they had to leave parliament altogether for the safety of their family.
The text of Winston Peters's post about the broken window. Tonight a disgusting coward has gone to my home and smashed a window. Glass was shattered all over our dog. He also left a sign on our front door. I wasn't home. But my partner and guest were. This is truly gutless. This is the type of violent hate-filled behaviour we warned about in the past few days about the radical left. When we have protesters, political bloggers, and MPs alike encouraging this behaviour, posting politician's home addresses online, and acting with pure ignorance and extremism, this is the result. This is the slippery slope that the left has been on the pathway of radicalisation for some time. New Zealanders need to be deeply concerned about where our country is going and see who are the perpetrators of this divisive and violent behaviour. All of New Zealand needs to be deeply concerned.

"Well I think it's better to let him say that." "He's very good at staying on message, and that's not to be underestimated when it comes to a politician," Seymour said, somewhat diplomatically. Does Seymour think Luxon is a good prime minister? "Well, he loves representing New Zealand internationally. I think he's very good at that. I'm not sure I could give a cuddle to an Australian prime minister, but he does it almost seamlessly."
