What centrist libs can't seem to internalize is that the US contains a large, longstanding, well-funded political movement that *wants political violence and authoritarianism*. It does not need to be provoked in any way in order to pursue those goals.

My new column out today:

All of us who work on climate have long walked a razor’s edge between hope and despair, and the last few months (or years) have made it near impossible to keep one’s balance. But I would put the current predicament differently. www.nationalobserver.com/2025/07/11/o...

“Most of what we call natural disasters (tornadoes, droughts, hurricanes) are indeed natural, though human contributions may increase their likelihood or intensity. But they aren’t disasters—they’re hazards. If a hurricane slams into land where no one lives, it isn’t a disaster; it’s weather.”

I'd ask all of you and @jcbslide.bsky.social to think about these questions:

Can we know what’s true?

Can we debate and decide fairly?

Can we hold power accountable?

If you answer "no" to those questions, then I'd argue you aren't living in a functional democracy, just a performance of one.

This is just punitive.

It also sends a signal of how little this Pentagon cares about European security. Any European leader taking solace from the NATO summit needs to look at this and ask what cuts are they planning for Europe? They ain’t gonna be superficial
Per reporting by my colleague @olliecarroll.bsky.social, US has cancelled 8,000-ish 155mm shells for Ukraine. That is 20% of current MONTHLY production. How that would have materially affected US readiness is hard to see. That's before getting onto 25 Stingers & 92 AIM-7, which are being phased out

The US state in free fall.

Had to check cause I thought it was fake. It is not. And the rest of the last posts are about the same level.
The official DHS account makes a post that suggests they want to disappear the Menswear Guy, whose posts are so magisterial that they regularly eviscerate powerful politicians, because he told his story of his mother carrying him into the USA from Canada when he was a baby. Ghoulishly giddy stuff.

Democracies do not mobilize their military against their own people. Authoritarian states do. This is a war-footing escalation, intended to assert control. Massive violation of 🚨 civil liberties and🚨rule of law.
CNN: We have breaking news now from the Pentagon. CNN can now report that roughly 500 Marines are being mobilized in response to the protests in Los Angeles.
