Bloomberg: Duffy said he is prepared to close US airspace if the budget crisis makes flying unsafe.

FAA is already short on air traffic controllers, and many of them are working without pay.

More than 6,200 flights were delayed on Friday and nearly 500 were canceled.

Okay, so this is fascinating. It still sucks that our flight is delayed by hours, and that I've missed my connection, but I love tangible examples of fractal complexity in systems, so at least there's a new example I can use to explain the concept.

Systems are so very, very complicated sometimes.

Doesn't matter how large the commercial jet is, only for small private craft does JAR have a general engineering license.

Since Part 66 came along some 15 years ago, engineers even need to qualify for lots more individual subsystems: Someone may be active on hydraulics, but expired on landing gear.
EASA part 66 - Aircraft Maintenance Engineer personal Licensing
EASA part 66 deals with the licensing of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering personal. It also set standards For type rating courses.

SAS, flying under JAR not FAA regulations, requires type ratings.

So unlike in the US, engineers are trained for and need a license to work on every aircraft type, engine, modification. On top, these expire when not enough hands on experience in the past years can be demonstrated.
October 12, 2025 at 5:34 AM
We've been sitting on the tarmac in Tallinn for nearly two hours because SAS is basically too cheap to pay for their own engineers.

Which is kind of nuts when you think that the whole problem would be a non-issue if the airlines were smart enough to pool funds and pay for airport wide engineers.

It appears a very serious concern has emerged over the last 24 hours or so.

Is it bejaysus, bejaysis, bejasus, or bejasis?

Portland is amazing and this is such a joyous response to a deeply depressing authoritarian set of actions.

When this finally ends, I hope every single ICE agent and complicit cop serves prison time and is ostracized for life.
Portland's famous Unipiper was spotted at the Portland ICE protest where he played his bagpipes in front of Santa, Mr. Potato Head, Garfield and more -- all while surrounded by bubbles.

This is exactly how the Hungary plan went, and the December meeting went down to the wire.

Why is our Government supporting amass surveillance plan the German police minister said should be ‘taboo’ and the Dutch spy agency said was a threat to security?
Once again, this happens every time the Council/Parliament try to ram through Chat Control. They know this is a terrible idea.

At this point, the only reason they're trying to introduce it again is that they're hoping people aren't paying attention.

It's really interesting how many people are terrible at grasping scale. When I read this, I think to myself 'well, obviously, you need automation/ML for moderation', but I'm sure that until many see the numbers, the scale question isn't even considered.
so yes, machine learning is a very, very important part of a social media platform. platforms of scale _have_ to grapple with these problems, and only-human review just isn't it.

I love this initiative and happily used it to send a customized message to my MEPs. It saddens me that Ireland is a supporter of this affront to rights and freedoms, and I hope they all get lots of messages from similarly concerned constituents.
Take action!

@fightchatcontrol.bsky.social thank you for creating this. Chat Control is one of the worst European policies and the fact that MEPs still don't seem to get it indicates that they haven't been hearing enough from worried and concerned constituents.

This will get worse. Women will be surveiled, harassed and prosecuted until they have no rights and live in fear. This has always been their plan.

The reasons for eroding privacy always sound reasonable at first (nobody wants to protect terrorists or pedos), but sooner or later, the Overton Window shifts and people are getting rounded up for sending a group meme mocking a politician, or exposing corruption.
No, my message is that govs are containers for power, which can be exercised brutally or w wisdom, & tech is a collection of methods that can be abused or leveraged for good.

TLDR tech and gov aren't stable categories. Validate both (like, by examining Signal's open source code) before you trust.
October 6, 2025 at 9:42 AM
This would be a terrible decision. It's already bad that so many countries' MEPs (including Ireland) want to mandate technology companies to build a snitch line that violates privacy rights. It's shocking that the EU pushes this now, as they watch the world slither towards authoritarianism.
📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.
We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...
