Saw on tonight's walk that a new 7-11 opened immediately across the street from another 7-11, only 3 storefronts down from a Family Mart. 😂 As much as I joke about this being Taiwan culture, I know it's actually Taipei tourism related bc this one has zero rice or cooking oil but many fancy snacks.

Got in about 90 min of good writing work before a migraine descended (about 220-odd words added to chapter even after deletions), with another 3 hours of light additions and offline quote harvesting much later, after the meds took effect.

Too many boards and presidents appear to believe that the value and legitimacy of their university resides in the brand when it, in fact, resides in knowledge and judgment, which in turn resides in the faculty and academic staff.

2+ intense hours logged today (prior appointments + life maintenance priority day) but I got a really important piece of my chapter done and flagged out my immediate next steps for a hopefully easier path back in tomorrow.

Woke up this morning mentally bracing to finally draft the last pieces of my dissertation this month. 🥴

The serendipitous digital peer pressure of @annakornbluh.bsky.social's #acadecawriteathon plus some light dopamine farming ahead of starting got me out of monkeymind morass!

1 down, 30 to go 🤘

Imagine if Regan had stayed an actor. Imagine if AIDS had been handled like a major public health emergency instead of disregarded as “gay cancer.” Imagine how many people could still be alive. Now imagine how many of them might be in public office.
#WorldAIDSday
I was diagnosed with #HIV in 1998, when I was 30.
Many of my friends had died of AIDS. I did not expect to live to 50.
I’m 58 now.
HIV treatment works.
Treatment also makes it impossible for me to pass HIV on during sex.
Ensure HIV treatment for all.
End HIV stigma.

I've spoken with a lot of people about this, and all of of them told me they were furious about this tragedy and the apparent corruption that enabled it. They want truth and accountability and justice for the victims, and they're not confident that they'll get any of that, which makes them angrier.

"While these patriotic elected representatives were MIA, grassroots mobilization provided support systems for victims."

Such a good overview of the chilling set of problems that are unfairly elided/ignored when Western media wrongly blames the fire on "bamboo scaffolding."

Also, anarchy FTW ✊

I now name it the 90/10 rule, and I try to practice it on the micro and macro levels.

So, of trans children starting HRT, more than 98% stay on it, and of the small fraction that don't, over half identify as nonbinary. Less than 1% go “nah, turns out I'm cis.” From an N of four fucking hundred. Why the hell are we making children run a gauntlet? Some asshole's political career?
A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT.

It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... & of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse.

Trans care saves lives.

This is truly one of the most moving public art pieces I've ever seen. Walking along that wall, reading the hearts (many with names written on them) felt incredibly emotional.
Everyone who has memory-holed the pandemic in the UK should take a walk along the Covid memorial wall in London. Each heart represents a single person who died of Covid, and it goes of *forever*. It's very, very long.

This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

"Making that conservative belief that progressives scorn them a public or face-to-face reality when there's a chance of changing people's minds or just accepting people who have changed their minds is not strategic. It throws away an opportunity for a shift."
