Woke up this morning mentally bracing to finally draft the last pieces of my dissertation this month. 🥴

The serendipitous digital peer pressure of @annakornbluh.bsky.social's #acadecawriteathon plus some light dopamine farming ahead of starting got me out of monkeymind morass!

1 down, 30 to go 🤘

I was in Berkeley for a day and I went to pay homage. The vibes felt different and I couldn't place my finger on why (is it the place or me that has changed, or both?) but it still made me so happy to browse all the different things I still can't afford while picking up masa to bring back to Taipei.

I feel like the real lede is buried with the firing of the copyright official, both because of the obvious cronyism at play and because if said official works for the LOC she may be subject to Legislative rather than Executive authority.

Hands down the funniest context for roadsign typos to show up in 😅

Pictures of the offender, for tax and also scale. He's large and unperturbed enough that I'm more worried for me than for him, but still: one corvid holding a grudge is scary enough. An entire murder bent on policing their turf? Terrifying.

He does seem to love dog camp (evidence below) but I think he still loves me more 💕 wish we could get you out for a visit while we're still in Taiwan!

Traveled to AAS this weekend and flight delays allowed me to set foot in my homestate for the first time in 5 years. The bay is as beautiful, and in-n-out as tasty, as ever. But now SFO has gender neutral bathrooms! Mostly used by old men tho bc gender inclusive design benefits everyone!

Night-time wanderings and stray tags in the already emptying Wanhua streets ahead of Lunar New Year.

Alleycat posting here for awhile as a timeline cleanser, while I boycott the app I used to use for such frippery.

Age yourself with your first computer

When I started college, I made it 2 months before computer lab life broke me. A friend sold me their old Mac Powerbook G3. Only 5 or 6 lbs. Sleek. Smol. Sexy. Buying that laptop, even used, felt like such a status marker.

By high school computers were normalized enough that teachers only accepted typed papers. Mom had upgraded our second hand tech by then, building us a 486 or a Pentium II (or maybe both). But I didn't have access to a printer, so instead through grade 12 I actually typed assignments on one of these.

Age yourself with your first computer

We got this secondhand, years after it was actually released. Sometimes I was allowed to play video games on it (or the typing tutor that pretended to be a video game)

What a lovely potion! What's it for? I just made a batch of Purple Cloud linament (紫雲膏/紫當膏) and am preparing to brew another, this time with a smidge less beeswax to keep it more supple.

That said, the algorithm recently reminded me that I enjoy Throwing Muses so I relistered to this in its entirety and was impressed how well it aged.

Post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

This by a long mile, altho mostly that's because "Surfer Rosa" by the Pixies actually came out in 1988.

I'm also obsessed with this, but it seems fairly common around Taipei.

Anyone here into visible mending/sashiko patching and embroidery to repair clothing? I'm experimenting with it to salvage my favorite pants but feeling some kinda way about the look of a large patch in isolation versus maybe adding patches for aesthetics that aren't yet structurally necessary.

This quote reminds me of something I read in the introduction of Jane Bennett's "Vibrant Matter" last night about the role of past reading in shaping perception, changing random gutter trash into an assemblage of things:
