Overheard conversation between my boyfriend and Marcel last night:

BF: No, you can't touch my food with your paw.
Marcel: Mew.
BF: Why? I think you know why.

I have the same thought anytime someone says “ but they meant well.”

Good intentions don’t matter if your actions hurt people.
I’ve written about a lot of horrible historical figures in American politics and I always get earnest questions asking “but did they really believe that?”

I get the curiosity but I tend to remind people what they do in public is vastly more important than what they tell themselves in private
I have no idea what Graham Platner's religious views are, but the way our culture is obsessed with trying to divine a person's "real" interior views, by definition radically private and unknowable, above and beyond external actions in the world, is a sign of how culturally Protestant we all are.

I could totally see him saying this, since he apparently doesn't know anything about anything.
INTERVIEWER: You were born January 30, 1972 in Shreveport, Louisiana, correct?

JOHNSON: I don't know anything about that, it's the first I'm hearing of it

Natchitoches, LA.
What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Oh this is fabulous!
4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

So gather around children, for this is the tale of The Rice Truck Saga

That is a bird on a mission right there.
A Great Egret getting a running start to chase off other Great Egrets that landed in the pond. The pond is pretty small, and this bird decided it was big enough for only one bird.

White people often have trouble recognizing racism when it’s not intentionally malicious because we were taught it’s about hating people of color, when it’s often about not considering people of color at all or assuming you know what’s best.

Justices Kagan, Sotomayor, and Jackson must be so tired.
Kagan leads the dissent for the Democratic appointees as such: “Once again, this Court uses its emergency docket to destroy the independence of an independent agency, as established by Congress.”

Good way to scare people and keep them in line, though.
The US is preparing for potential Iranian terror attacks on the Fourth of July, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce says.

No suggestion they’ve had any actual intelligence, though.

Many people think cats are sneaky. The word sneaky implies that a cat is hiding what they're doing. Anyone who has ever lived with a cat knows that cats are brazen and will look you dead in the eye while doing something they're not supposed to do, with a mutinous look on their face daring you to 1/

I'm honestly not sure this was the goal, but it's certainly a handy side benefit.
Republicans have been defunding education for decades for this reason. An uneducated electorate is easier to control.
The sad reality is, the overwhelming majority of Americans don't know there's a voter for the Speaker going on, don't care & won't be able to name him after the vote. This is what happens in a country where civics education is no longer universal. Its absence lets darkness settle in over democracy.

I have always loved public libraries, but having young children has exponentially increased my gratitude and sense of indebtedness to them. Our local library is such a huge part of our lives. The books, the programming, the very intentionally curated kids’ section. It’s all such a gift.

I’m a public librarian in a degenerating democracy, and I am pleading: Care about your library. Use it. See what programs and events it offers. And pay attention to its governing body. See who the trustees are. Consider running yourself. Libraries will need all the community support they can get. 📚
