The biggest change, however, is among the people who visit the center, Mears said. Not many had dared to hope for the center to remain open, accustomed to loss after years or sometimes lifetimes of trauma. Steves' investment in the center, and the people who rely on it, "means something." "It says, 'They are valued. People out there care about us,'" Mears said. "That means a lot." For Steves, the purchase was a gift, but also a way to protest the "insatiable greed" behind the homelessness crisis in the U.S. Communities should not have to rely on the whims of wealthy people to have their essential needs met, he said. Instead, Steves said "smartly invested tax revenue" should fund services that keep vulnerable people healthy and safe. Steves is already planning improvements for the "tin can of a building," like repairing its heating system, installing new showers and buying industrial strength washing machines so people can do their laundry for free. He hopes to open a bike repair at the center, extend its hours and use it as a cold weather shelter during winter months, he said. "I wanted to make a difference. I had this opportunity to walk the talk and love my neighbor," Steves said. "Everybody can pitch in, but we have to inspire people to roll up their sleeves and get involved."

Each bears a share of the blame. Don't ever let them forget it.
Andry Hernandez, one of the detainees who was also released just over a week ago, told NPR that guards routinely beat prisoners with batons in the hallway — or dragged them to a small, windowless cell known as "La Isla," or "The Island," where the abuse was even more brutal. According to Hernandez, 32, the prisoners would be dragged out of their cells for complaining about their conditions, taking a bath outside designated hours, or even for making too much noise. Hernandez, who is openly gay, said he was once taken by the guards to "La Isla" after guards noticed him bathing with a bucket outside designated hours. He said that he was beaten by three guards wearing masks. And forced to perform oral sex on one of the guards. After a couple of hours, he was dragged back to his cell. "CECOT was hell on Earth," Hernandez told NPR from Capacho, Venezuela, where he's now back with his family.

🚨NEW: Erez Reuveni, the DOJ lawyer fired for his honesty in the Kilmar Abrego Garcia case, sends Congress a whistleblower letter detailing lawlessness at the DOJ around the CECOT deportations.

He says Emil Bove told the DOJ to respond to likely court orders blocking flights with "fuck you."
Bove then made a remark concerning the possibility that a court order would enjoin those removals before they could be effectuated. Bove stated that DOJ would need to consider telling the courts "fuck you” and ignore any such court order. Mr. Reuveni perceived that others in the room looked stunned, and he observed awkward, nervous glances among people in the room. Silence overtook the room. Mr. Reuveni and others were quickly ushered out of the room. Notwithstanding Bove's directive, Mr. Reuveni left the meeting understanding that DOJ would tell DHS to follow all court orders.21 - Mr. Reuveni was stunned by Bove's statement because, to Mr. Reuveni's knowledge, no one in DOJ leadership - in any Administration – had ever suggested the Department ofJustice could blatantly ignore court orders, especially with a "fuck you.” Mr. Reuveni was in disbelief, because, on the contrary, the Department of Justice consistently advises its clients of their obligation to follow court orders, not to ignore them. Mr. Reuveni knew that it was absurd and unlawful to do otherwise, a proposition that Mr. Reuveni felt even more certain of after a brief conversation with his supervisor, August Flentje, shortly after the meeting.

The Bove allegations should be treated as something akin to Watergate, or Iran Contra. The administration was attempting to do something they *knew* was illegal (anticipating the courts saying as much), and then trying to COVER IT UP. Only here instead of it being run out of the WH or NSC, it’s DOJ

New footage just dropped of ICE agents in Bell running through an intersection and driving erratically — in private vehicles (with no lights or sirens), causing a traffic accident after which they jumped out of their pickup truck with machine guns drawn. This is what set everything off in Bell.

Rep. Laurel Libby, R-Auburn, recently used my second-place finish in the 1,600-meter run, and that of my teammate in the 800-meter run, to malign Soren Stark-Chessa, the trans-identified athlete who finished first. One of the reasons I chose to run cross-country and track is the community: Teammates cheering each other on, athletes from different schools coming together, and the fact that personal improvement is valued as much as, if not more than, the place we finish. Last Friday, I ran the fastest 1,600-meter race I have ever run in middle school or high school track and earned varsity status by my school’s standards. I am extremely proud of the effort I put into the race and the time that I achieved. The fact that someone else finished in front of me didn’t diminish the happiness I felt after finishing that race. I don’t feel like first place was taken from me. Instead, I feel like a happy day was turned ugly by a bully who is using children to make political points. We are all just kids trying to make our way through high school. Participating in sports is the highlight of high school for some kids. No one was harmed by Soren’s participation in the girls’ track meet, but we are all harmed by the hateful rhetoric of bullies, like Rep.
