Ask Maggie: Build Your Dream Roster
The powers that be at Cheesehead TV decide to switch me to Fridays for the offseason, and suddenly I’m debuting on Friday the 13th? Ominous. But anyway, now that the Super Bowl is behind us the offseason feels especially real. Thankfully soon we’ll have the Combine, free agency, and the draft to look forward to. Let’s…slay…these questions (that’s a Friday the 13th joke).
“Did you do a Super Bowl spread this year? What's your go-to football party food and drink?” - Tony
We used to have a huge Super Bowl party every year, but we haven’t these last two seasons. Last year we were moving during the Super Bowl so we had to keep it low key out of necessity. Our house was a disaster zone of boxes. But this year we just didn’t have a good game plan with two kids that would be in bed before halftime. Next year, though, we’ll definitely be bringing it back! Probably not though honestly because when the Packers are in the Super Bowl in 2027 I’ll be too stressed to have company over.
If we’re throwing a party we always do pulled pork and a crazy charcuterie board. We also like to try to find beers from the respective Super Bowl cities. I didn’t do that this year since we kept it low key, but we’d have like, Boulevard Brewing for Kansas City, Victory Brewing for Philadelphia. It’s just a fun way to incorporate the Super Bowl teams through beers we probably wouldn’t normally have in the fridge. And then we always do Super Bowl squares, of course, because who doesn’t love a little gambling? Except you aren’t allowed to pick your numbers the way we do it. We let dice decide which square(s) you get.
“What would be your dream team of past and present players?” - Kelly
This is a slow week for questions so I’m going to build an entire roster. I would encourage you all to do the same, because this was a lot of fun. I’ll go 11 personnel for my offense, so I’ll have three wide receivers.
I’m prefacing this by saying this is my dream team in a favorite players capacity, not necessarily a dream team from a “most talented at their position” perspective. But I bet this squad could still win a Super Bowl…
Quarterback - Aaron Rodgers
Running Back - Eddie Lacy
Wide Receivers - Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson, James Jones
Tight End - Richard Rodgers
Offensive Line - David Bakhtiari, T.J. Lang, Corey Linsley, Jerry Kramer, Bryan Bulaga
Starting with Rodgers, he’s the quarterback that grew my love of the game and turned it into such a rabid passion. I fell in love with football when Rodgers was at the helm, so this is an easy choice. He’s responsible for so many of my favorite football memories. Lacy was the first Packers player I ever got to meet. He signed a mini helmet for me and it was the start of an autograph collection that now dominates my basement. I also just love bruising running backs. I’ll take a power back over a finesse back any day. I probably had the hardest time picking my three wide receivers because there are SO many incredible options here. Adams is the most technically sound receiver I’ve watched play the position, so he’s on the list because he’s one of one. Nelson was always Mr. Clutch and had an unreal connection with Rodgers, so he’s on the list for that. But that third spot is tricky! I had to give the nod to Jones because he rocks a hoodie, which is my favorite clothing item, and he was always a consistently reliable presence on offense. He’s also a great dude in real life and he’s another autograph hanging in my basement. For tight end, you can mock me all you want but Richard Rodgers owning the Hail Mary of the century is why he’s on this list. There are better talents, but that play (and reacting to it with my dad, running around the living room in the house I now own screaming our heads off) is engrained in my brain for life. For my o-line, Bakhtiari and Lang on the left side are going to snatch some souls. I know Lang played more right guard for Green Bay, but that’s Jerry’s spot, and Jerry Kramer is my favorite football player of all time, so he gets to stay at RG. Linsley is in my “hall of fame people” category, and Bulaga, Iowa. Nuff said.
The comments section is going to rag on me for showing my age on offense, but I’ll make up for it on the defensive side of the ball, promise. The defense has always had my heart, anyway. There are too many talented DBs to choose from, so we’re going with nickel personnel on defense.
Defensive Tackles - Reggie White, B.J. Raji
Outside Linebackers - Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers
Inside Linebackers - Ray Nitschke, Dave Robinson
DBs - Willie Wood, LeRoy Butler, Charles Woodson, Tramon Williams, Nick Collins
B.J. Raji is my second-favorite Packer all-time behind only Jerry Kramer, so it’s no surprise he’s one of my two selections on the d-line. And any list would get thrown out immediately without Reggie. “Spill it, Pickett!” lives rent-free in my head forever thanks to Clay Matthews III. And Julius Peppers is a consummate pro. I know he was only around for three seasons but his impact was lasting, and now he’s permanently enshrined in Canton. My inside linebacker tandem, pound for pound, might arguably be the most talented duo in the entire lineup. Those 60s Packers were no joke. Finally, the DBs. This was absolutely the toughest section to narrow down, and why I had to cheat and give myself an extra body by using nickel personnel. I could’ve gone with dime and still would’ve left an incredible name off the list.
There we have it. This is definitely a Super Bowl winning roster, right? That defense is going to take people’s lunch money. Good luck scoring over 10 points on ‘em. Offensively, that’s a mauling ground game and a dynamic air attack led by one of the smartest football minds to ever play the game. I like our chances.
Leave your own rosters in the comments, or drop your questions for next week’s mailbag! In case I miss them, it’s always best to email your questions to chtvmailbag@gmail.com. Happy Friday the 13th! See you next week!
