My fear, when these proposals were mooted then adopted, was that the effect of making citizenship contingent for some citizens would be to make those same citizens second class: how can you confidently exercise your full range of democratic rights against a Government which can remove them?

Dear Roy, Before Christmas you had a Wheelie Bin pinched. I have just had a Satellite Dish taken from my garden. I used this as a Parabolic Reflector for recording Birdsong. So if anyone sees this at a car boot sale, be careful as it may be Radioactive.

Watching this battle of the sexes tennis match. Nobody sends to be taking it seriously, or having any fun either. Just an utterly joyless event.

Beautiful new translations of some remarkable clear-headed writing. It might be trite to say, but these essays could have been written fifty years ago or last week, they still have immense power.
new today: for the first time in English, two brilliant essays by Natalia Ginzburg, "Universal Pity" and "The Jews," translated by Gini Alhadeff, with an introduction by Pankaj Mishra www.equator.org/articles/our...
Our Monstrous Ideas • EQUATOR
In these two essays, newly translated for Equator, the Italian writer articulates a powerful moral vision of what it means to belong, and to whom we owe our compassion

I'm friends with some of Walliams' family and they said Christmas was awful at his house this year. This was the first time he didn't do any of his accents. Spare a thought for those targeted by the bitter wokerati.

Ugh, imagine how excited an illustrator would’ve been to work on this (especially one with some kind of person connection to the topic), and it wouldn’t have been expensive, instead a BBC producer just typed prompts about an enslaved woman hiding in the woods, looking sad in a ship, etc
this is an incredible and very touching story but unsure what the BBC felt those weird AI images added to it?

UK lacks 'coherent' social mobility plan, govt adviser says.

Need to reduce income/wealth inequality; excessive inherited wealth; better access to healthcare, education, jobs, housing.

Govts captured by corporations/rich, practice regressive taxation, slaves to arbitrary fiscal rules.
