French researcher, going to a conference in Houston, was forbidden entry to US; his work and personal electronics were both confiscated.

Why? Because a “random search” of his cell phone revealed a negative personal opinion on Trump and the Trump administration. www.lemonde.fr/internationa...

Trump and Musk are going after Columbia for "antisemitism" and Hopkins for "DEI" and Penn for "trans spts".

Why those issues?

Because this is the start of an authoritarian soft takeover of ALL universities.

Those issues are just politically convenient because they draw some support from Dems. 1/
They are coming for every university, if you think you’re safe because it hasn’t been yours yet I don’t know what to tell you. Join AAUP, refuse to comply, organize your colleagues

One of the hardest things about being a progressive in 2025 is not realizing that certain people you love would have been Nazis in the 1940s, but that they would have been one of the German citizens who had to be dragged to the concentration camps before they believed the Nazis had been that bad.

Fascinating that someone as single-mindedly power hungry as Gavin Newsom was incapable of recognizing that he COULD have become an extremely powerful anti-Trump warlord almost instantly if he’d gone hard in that direction.

Instead, he irretrievably shot himself in the dick by starting a podcast.
California has the strength and size to hit the MAGA freaks hard, but that becomes a lot harder when its governor is a sniveling collaborationist.

I don’t think we have the *time* to just wait for Gavin Newsom to term out at this point.
God, I really wish California had a better leader than that feckless meat-puppet right now.

Should be a clear lesson from reconstruction, imo
A frustrating thing is dems are obsessed with restoring norms and to get things sane again it would be required to, likely, not let any republicans in a position to sabotage any fixing of these government entities.

But there is a real risk they will immediately restore “bipartisan balance”.
Trump fires Democrat FTC Commissioners— Alvaro Bedoya & Rebecca Kelly Slaughter. The FTC is the federal agency in charge of consumer protection and closest thing U.S. has to a privacy protection agency. There are usually 5 commissioners, 2 from opposing party: www.nytimes.com/2025/03/18/t...

That is exactly the right take. Advocating for things like Universal Healthcare (aka, everyone getting to benefit from our labor) is critical to regain public trust in our guild.

Universities need to treat the Trump administration's hostage lists as organizing lists. A large majority of the universities on these lists should issue a JOINT public response making clear that they won't give in and why they're right not to.

That creates space for the rest of the sector to join.

republicans are treating blue cities and states like we're conquered territory to be plundered and destroyed. looted. it's an intolerable situation and the idea that any democrats are willing to vote for this is outrageous.
Warner, one of the DMV senators, tells me "the hit on the District is just mean-spirited." Said they asked Republicans if slashing DC's budget was "a mistake, and no, basically, it was a pointed 'screw you.'"

Never forget this. They are liars. Their resistance is fake. They want to be powerless so they can reap the rewards of pretending to resist while risking nothing and attempting nothing. They are the reason the country is where it is and we won't be safe until they're gone.

It is time to get creative in torturing US Senators. They presumably go to restaurants, get on planes, go in and out of cars, and other tasks that leave them publicly available. Every minute of that (yes, even with their families) should be the greatest misery anyone has ever known without violence.

Authoritarians govern through fear, not legislation. The simple fear of what they would do in certain situations can push even the opposition to capitulate. That’s success for them.
