Feature filmmakers love left-wing violence plots. Secret gun-toting guerrilla groups, shootouts, car chases, hunted fugitives, and the rest work well – for movies, whose only job is to hold our attention for a couple of hours.

In 2004, Parisian police were conducting a training exercise in the french catacombs and found, after moving past a desk and a tape playing audio of snarling dogs, a fully functional movie theater and bar. When they returned 3 days later, the equipment was gone, with a note: “Do not try to find us.”

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.

Glad to see we’re united against the “compact.” For one, I love USC’s cosmopolitanism. I’m proud to have directed dissertations by students from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the U.S., and every term I love having awesome students from China, India, and many other places. Fight on!

In 1945, the Allies faced a tricky question: where to hold Nazi war criminals until the trials.

A run-down hotel in Luxembourg was quickly converted to a prison ("Camp Ashcan"). The hope was to keep the nature of the prisoners secret.

In May 1945, this failed, and almost turned into a disaster. /1

Political violence is evil, killing people is evil, a country with more guns in it than people is broken, and what the government is saying about political violence right now being a primarily leftwing phenomenon is factually, statistically untrue. They are using this moment to rewrite history.

I'm kinda resigned to the fact that most people don't really give a shit about how millions globally will die horrible deaths directly due to Musk and Trump's decision to gut USAID - I guess it's too abstract to comprehend, or something - but it is HAPPENING, and nobody is swooping in to stop it.

The dwindling legitimate media really doesn't want to admit these polls don't represent a difference of opinion so much as living in a different reality. Maybe because that would require acknowledging shameless propaganda is much more successful at reaching audiences than straight news now.

I'm not saying this to warn people about how to act on the ground, but to warn you all about how to address this. Scolding folks about how to behave when their community is under siege is not the move. Don't scapegoat victims in advance. Talk about what the pre-scripted fascist narrative will be.
