usually goes by nog. bobcat, probably. he/him. often skulking around a stand of fir trees. may be rapidly approaching. trains, not kings. opinions do not represent my employers past or present, but may represent lunch.
gonna be pedantic and point out that this means that this means that conceptually in the worlds described by human language there is an evil vector, i don't think it necessarily proves that there is an evil vector absent the involvement of human language and the ideas of evil encoded within
i'm going to sound sarcastic here but genuinely one of the most interesting aspects of LLMs is that they are proving that evil is real, by which i mean if you train them to do one bad thing they start doing other bad things that you have not trained them to do
At least once a month, Anthropic puts out an alignment paper d AI behavior where, if you saw it in a science fiction film, you‘d be screaming at the idiot scientists onscreen to stop development

irregular reminder that saddam hussein's son was really into 1980s airbrushed van/novel cover art and owned a few high end reproductions of (as far as I'm willing to look) undisputed genre master Rowena Morrill's paintings

i do think it's important to just say 'spatchcocking' as many times as possible during the holiday season, given that most people, myself included, to their detriment and tragedy, forget that it is a technique that exists the other 95% of the year

A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

my relationship with my mother in law is complex but her decades of experience cooking for several hundred people every day makes Thanksgiving achieve a certain... consistency that i think many don't get to experience
the “thanksgiving food is bad” discourse raises its ugly head every year, but the truth remains that thanksgiving food can be amazing as long as you know how to cook. the problem is we’re throwing a few million sunday drivers directly into a grand prix
I think this is unfair to turkey. turkey is good but hard to cook well because it is so damn big. turkey *parts* are great but lack the esthetic appeal of a centerpiece bird.

a lot of the failure modes of discourse on this site stem from there being more in heaven and on earth than dreamed of in the philosophies of the average poaster

I once knew a Federal bank examiner, and one time someone asked him why we had to KEEP inspecting banks over and over. He basically said every new batch of business school grads invents bank fraud from first principles.
AirBnB CEO calling it “vibe revenue” just 👨‍🍳 😘

The underlying cause of every bubble - debt masquerading as financial innovation - depends on not just short financial memory & speculative neophytism, but reinventing jargon of finance, like how each generation of kids has new ways to say same things.

a lot of them also struggle with the idea that different people have different needs
I do still love my head-fi stack but, I don't talk as often about audiophile stuff here because one thing I learned early on is too many audiophiles cannot process the concept that I might be happy with my stack and thus don't want to try theirs, and I reckon that particular edge cuts both ways.

as @marwoodlennox.bsky.social points out often, something you see in even early 20th century novels is the regularity of men losing their virginity to prostitutes hired out for them by relatives

Amtrak has a problem: There’s more demand than it can handle. Trains regularly sell out, year round.

The need for more capacity is evident year-round, as the most popular parts of routes sell out or are available only at shockingly high prices

i drink two monsters a day when i can't get my meds, the Adderall gets me to "having a memory" with less severe side effects
yeah tbh I’d really rather be on ADHD meds and NOT have to develop a two pack a day cigarette habit as someone who’s never smoked before just to function
I guess I can drink twelve coffees a day while chain smoking if you want me to do this in a socially acceptable manner, I just don't see how that's better for my physical or mental health than Vyvanse, y'know?
