ROMAN CITIZEN #2: @Cato is this true?
CATO: Many people believe that Carthage must be destroyed. It’s a complex issue and the reality is probably more nuanced than that.

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.
If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

Senate Democrats think this is the appropriate response because they begin every conflict with the assumption they will lose, and then ask “How can we end this as quickly as possible while creating the appearance of having tried to win so the base isn’t mad?”
I truly don’t know how you look at the past week and THEN decide THIS is an appropriate — let alone the right — response.
Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

at this point we have so much evidence for the proposition that “the electorate with trump on the ballot looks radically different from the electorate when he’s not on the ballot” that weighting to a trump year in a non-trump year is polling malpractice
Good summary of why pollsters whiffed in VA and NJ. TLDR: electorate looked like 2017 when pollsters assumed it would look like 2024, plus Latino turnout exploded.

it is astonishing. i always say “the median american swing voter is stupider then the stupidest person you’ve ever met,” but the reality is somehow even worse than that.
i feel we dramatically overestimate the intelligence of the American electorate

to be fair, they were repeatedly told by the media that this was a completely different person with completely different positions on basically every important issue
voters are absolutely FURIOUS that when they elected this Donald Trump character, he turned out to be the same Donald Trump who was president from 2017 to 2021 who they all hated
At 42%, Trump approval rating now back in first-term territory

Big drops among less politically engaged, like '24 non-voters and independents, and among young people and POC

*Strong* disapproval at its high point this term — nearly half country strongly👎 (now includes majority of independents)

Fascinating survey data on the missing Biden voters by Lake Research. The voters who sat out in '24 weren't looking for a centrist or turned off by trans rights. They want a genuine economic populist agenda: take on corporate greed, lower costs, and make the wealthy pay their fair share.
