I have designed and built a new kind of roller skate plate (the part between the boot and the wheels that does the steering). It's been a good way to learn more about machining and CNC as well as design for manufacturability.

I can't reply directly but here are some thoughts:
If you're not shooting a lot of film, you probably won't use up typical batch sizes of developer before it dies. I bought some Rodinal recently because it has a long shelf-life, so I can get my money's worth. Paper dev can go longer because you can
