It’s 9am TFT time here, and citizens are already gathering to protest Tariffs by the United States. Our plain clothes Officer Penguins are attempting to maintain calm, but unfortunately we keep losing them in the crowd.

All I keep thinking about is how Pete Hegseth raised questions of the competency of a Black four-star general and Air Force fighter pilot who was the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Hegseth asked did he get the job “because of his skin color? Or his skill? We’ll never know, but always doubt.”

I wouldn’t normally highlight this - but I think it is important to understand the sort of mind Peter Hitchens has - he lacks empathy - if he doesn’t experience it then it is made up and can be dismissed. An arrogance devoid of imagination and sadly prevalent in our world.

The devil will be in the detail, but there is a big difference in cost and scale between reorganising the NHS (1.5 million staff) and reorganising *NHS England* (13,000 staff). Lansley "dismantled the management line" all the way down. If Streeting just dismantles NHSE it won't be as costly.
BREAKING: Prime minister announces govt will abolish
@nhsenglandldn.bsky.social

"I have absolutely no intention of wasting time with a big costly reorganisation" - @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social told me in Dec 2023. Clearly the temptation - and perhaps his frustration proved too much

Reminder: In Putin's view, the "root causes of the crisis" are Ukrainian independence, sovereignty and self-determination.

Second Reminder: The actual root cause of the crisis is Putin.
NEW: At a press conference in Moscow, President Putin says Russia is in favour of a 30 day ceasefire.

But he says Russia has several outstanding issues, including (in his view) that Ukraine could use the time to rearm.

He says any ceasefire must “eliminate the root causes of the crisis”.

I see Chris Philp is now repeating Matt Goodwin's deliberate lie.

The correct figure is 17%, and most of those are long-standing residents (and in many cases will have British spouses/children).

Here’s the chart that really nudged me to write this.

The headcount of GP partners aged under 40 has fallen by 53% since 2015.

Overall partner headcount down from 68% ➡️ 48% in same time.

Current policy = ‘let it wither on the vine’. I’m not sure that’s right…..

Tesla’s stock has dropped by nearly half in three months. Even so, investors are still debating whether Elon Musk's electric-vehicle maker remains overpriced.

I’m lucky to have the time to take lots of exercise, but many people don’t.

Interesting to read this meta analysis in @jama.com.

If you are trying to lose body fat, they suggest you need at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise a week.

Still too low. Why wouldn’t all new homes come with PV+battery?
Two in five new homes in England now have solar panels

The Times: "The share of new properties with solar panels rose from 13% to 42% in the past year, but uncertainty remains over whether all new-builds will have them fitted"

I can't say this firmly enough: if you think 'the UK should spend more on defence so it can play a part in the defence of Europe' is analagous to...what, the British empire or an opportunity to air your grief about leaving the EU, you are a child who needs to grow up.
We can't reshape the borders of a continent that we voted to leave. That's the "real world".

Just because every political correspondent says the same thing doesn't make it right.

I'm not the one with fantasies: the entire Westminster village (which appears to be living in the previous century) is.
