Also, for error correction purposes, different patterns of fourteen bits represent different patterns of eight bits. So there is no one-to-one correspondence of pits and lands to the data actually being demultiplexed, decoded and presented by the player.

20-year packaged media authoring veteran, putting pits and lands onto shiny plastic discs so viewers can be prevented from skipping past a copyright warning. So is a pit 0 and a land 1, or is a pit 1 and a land 0?

Neither!

The transition from one state to the other is a 1.

If QAM in wifi hurt your head, stay away from GPS (which involves statistical reconstruction of a signal below the thermal noise level of the receiver).

Also, ones and zeros don't exist. They are our understood significant abstraction representations of an analog world were there is literally no absolute in measuring and we use electronics to lie to us about it.

Good luck!

In my first job out of school learning about flash memory and learning that the difference between a 1 and 0 was just how much charge was trapped, with a threshold (or multiple for MLC/TLC/etc), that was when I learned its abstraction all the way down to the very 1s and 0s we’re paid to make dance.

AI kind of feels like the endgame of this bit Graeber described in the original Bullshit Jobs essay: these people have been so thoroughly cleaved from any sense of purpose that they resent those who have one. They hate artists for their skill and think poverty should be the price of having a calling

Yes.

And then also fired a ton of senior agents with a ton of counterterrorism experience, including the Acting Director.
Didn’t the FBi pull a lot of personnel from anti terrorism to put them on deportations?

Actually the whole security establishment pivoted

Prediction: Some will seize on the shooting to try to pull Dems back to a position of cowardice on Trump's deportations, and Stephen Miller will scam dimwit commentators into making this case as well, but what happened ultimately won't dent public disapproval of the raids/arrests in the slightest.

THIS IS THE SIMPLE ONE.

Hmmmm, I dunno.... That kinda talk sounds pretty fascist to me. 🤔
Elon Musk, the guy who did two Nazi salutes in public and has previously described himself as a “free speech absolutist,” thinks it should be a crime to “falsely” call someone a Nazi or a fascist.

The realities of Trump aging in office:

He appears to doze off during events.

His public appearances mostly occur during a short window: Between noon and 5pm.

He sits while others stand.

His covers bruises with makeup.

He had an MRI scan that he tried to hide from the public.

We (the “developed” nations) need to either choose bikes, transit, and infill development — or cataclysmic change to habitability on the planet.

Change our lifestyle, or it will be changed for us.

Those are the only two choices.
Going after the last 5% of electricity supply CO2 reduction without reducing transportation emissions is lunacy.
I worry about mining for EV batteries, too.
But we can have a better quality of life if we substitute private cars for bikes, transit, infill development
Good figure from a recent ESIG report showing how marginal abatement costs in the electric sector start out low but increase sharply as you approach zero emissions.

At least 470 targets and counting

The list illuminates the sweeping effort by the president and his administration to punish dissent and reshape the government.
