A proposal to redevelop a grocery store. Beside a commuter rail station, great new bike corridor, and bus lanes. 1,077 homes in buildings from 6 to 14 storeys.

Neighbours call it a “massive” “megaproject” and want it scaled down to better match the scale of nearby single-family homes and duplexes.

Every time someone responds to an obviously normative-aspirational claim ("this not who we are", "this is not America", etc) with some I'm-very-radical descriptive rebuttal ("er actually America has always done <similar bad stuff>") an angel dies. Like, no joke, dead. Direct causal result of this.

<whispers> Data centres aren't really the problem. Increased electricity consumption isn't a major problem in itself, either. EVs, heat pumps, industrial electrification are all solutions. Not building enough renewables + storage, & improving the grid is the problem 😑

Obvs no desire to put someone on blast for something so minor but I do wanna go on the record as saying: I flat out don't believe they were laughing their arse off either while or as a result of typing this. A mild chuckle, at most. I'm sorry to be a cynic but there you have it this is what I think.

Some friends are having to move to the suburbs because they can’t afford a place in the city big enough for their three kids (now teenagers).

We need to keep people like this in mind when deciding how much housing to approve in the city (or when people say “we have enough housing already”).

Covid killed more Americans in less time than WW1 did British soldiers, but there’s a memorial in every British village and this is the first I have seen in America.
This is a first for me: an actual, honest to cod COVID memorial in the park by my parents' house.

I think a lot of Americans might assume Canada mainly takes issue with Republican behaviour and well, obviously, yeah, but we could also benefit from you reining in the raft of utterly delusional Democrats who have clearly spent no time bothering to understanding what we're upset about.

It pains me to say this, but if you are not a US citizen, you should not attend scientific conferences in the US, visit US institutions, or otherwise travel to our country.

Right now it's not worth the risk.

Hopefully that will change. If it doesn't, science in the US is sunk anyway.

Instead, it found that trans youth care was safe and effective, and that transgender youth need it.

Whoops.

I find this is the shape of so much urban policy in Toronto. Drivers who make driving worse by opposing tolls, urbanists who encourage driving because of ideological opposition to outward growth near transit (while allowing sprawl in the middle of nowhere).
Currently in Durham region where I'm reminded of how nonsensical the urban growth boundary in Toronto is. We allow all kinds of sprawl far from anything (including transit) but often heavily restrict it in areas with lots of amenities and transit.

I'm fascinated by all the people who have a broad and reflexive hatred of sport cyclists—as if they aren't the same people they see driving or walking or working. The only real variables are that these cyclists are "other" and that many people don't have insight into what it's like to ride.
