Today the UN COP climate summit kicked off in Brazil, and @london.gov.uk has been in Rio to promote action on climate change by cities. Back here in London, my @badvertising.bsky.social team mates launched a campaign to ask the Mayor to stop promoting pollution on London’s public transport network

The result is an endless series of capitulations to those political forces most determined to destroy it

Actually some portion of that is the trans pennine route upgrade which is still going ahead. I don’t have the emotional energy to work out what we are left with today though
Waving goodbye to that meagre 12-13% of ongoing uk rail electrification we had in the pipeline before summer 👋😢
Indian Railways will be fully electrified next year (it’s at ~99% currently)
UK is at 38% with tentatively another 12-13% new electrification committed
Indian Railways is building a 7000km high speed rail network by 2047
We can’t even get ours all the way from central London to central Birmingham

India: 67th poorest country in the world
UK: 160th poorest country in the world
India: 100% rail electrification is affordable, and we have achieved this in 2025
UK: anything more than 39% electrification is unaffordable, and we will never achieve 100%

Here is an embarrassing graph I have just made for a report. Fun fact:
in 2020/21 Indian Railways added the equivalent of the UK’s *entire electrified railway network* (over 6000 route kilometers!) to their own electrified network - and then did this again in 2021/22
…and AGAIN in 2022/23! 🤯

In the 90’ties Denmark decided to halt electrification and we got huge problems from it - mainly due to having to buy non-standard diesel trains.
The then finance minister, who said it couldn’t be afforded, has since said that it was one of his few regrets.

Paging the UK Labour Party
I really am just working from the basic premise of political science that public opinion isn’t just measurable — you can and should CREATE it.
This never stops being true, but I’m not sure Ds have ever, at least in my lifetime, learned to apply it for good. *Creating* public opinion either never occurs to them, or if it does, offends their sensibilities? It’s exasperating

only ~19% of the GB passenger fleet is still diesel, but more like 90% of freight trains. Lots of this rolling stock is life expired and needs to be renewed now. With govt refusing to do any more electrification, operators have no choice but to order new diesel (inc bi-mode) trains: lifespan ~35ys
The headline says ‘full’ electrification not affordable; the story says *no more electrification is affordable*. This failure guarantees GB railways cannot achieve network decarbonisation by 2030, & thus our national net zero target cannot be met even if we miraculously succeed in every other sector
