I've updated my monthly housing tracker, which you can find below. Of note, after very low housing starts in August, September and October, there was a substantial year-over-year improvement in November as 908 units were started. Completions are still the lowest of any of the six years I’ve tracked.

Garcia's Other Evolutions is a sprightly-written millennial banger set lovingly in Ottawa's Glebe. But it firmly locates Linden Terrace in the SpecFic landscape of post-Márquez Latin American authors confronting the polycrisis. Supported by a grant from the City, available at the OPL. Great read!

I love a good Strong Townsy speech!

#Ottcity councillor and mayoral candidate @jleiper.bsky.social makes the case for financially and environmentally sustainable development patterns.

Ottawa's New Zoning Bylaw goes to council for final approval in Jan

The tree on Granville is as beautiful as ever this year. My thanks to the residents for that holiday cheer.

I was honoured to have the chance to offer a few words on the inspiration I take from the local Jewish community's courage and hope as they again lit the menorah in Parkdale Park this evening, joined by residents and Councillor Devine. Hanukkah Sameach!

Frequent buses, a comprehensive and dense network, and reliable service would go a long way to mitigating the need for heated shelters.

Des bus fréquents, un réseau étendu et dense, et un service fiable contribueraient grandement à atténuer le besoin d'abris chauffés.
As OC Transpo misses targets, Ottawa riders left waiting in the cold
Could heaters be the solution to freezing riders left waiting for buses, or is there another way?

Some heavy lifting by council’s planning members on a plan years in the making. Tune into the final decision in January! (Because who isn’t thinking about the final CZB debate during the holidays?)

I loved spending a couple of hours with these young volunteers collecting empties at the Beer Store on Scott for the Christmas Exchange! Residents were very generous, helping make a merry Christmas for folks in need. Collection continues till 5:30.

What an INCREDIBLE night at the Bytown Sea Shanty Collective’s fundraiser for the Dalhousie Food Cupboard with @jleiper.bsky.social. My throat is hoarse from belting out sea shanties and carols with 500 people. And they raised $20,000 to help fight insecurity and feed people in Centretown!

Thanks so much, Ariel, for inviting me to last night's Bytown Sea Shanty Collective fundraiser at St. Brigid's for the Dalhousie Food Cupboard. It was awesome loudly and lustily ripping through shanty after shanty - with some Christmas crowd-pleasers in the mix!

Speaking of empties, it's dismaying to read about the hash that's being made of bottle recycling by the Ford government. Glad to read staunch circular economy advocate Valérie Leloup's cautions on where we're heading.
Ottawa Beer Store closures raise new questions about deposits, recycling
More empty alcohol containers are ending up in the blue bin, which isn't as good for recycling them as you might think.

From 10-5:30 at Beer Stores across Ottawa today, Running on Empties will be collecting bottle deposit returns for the Caring and Sharing Exchange's Christmas program. I'll be happy to help you unload during my shift from 12-2 at the Scott Street store!
