Thirteen of them. Thirteen little ogres with their own personalities but a shared obsession with shoes, for some reason. Quite fascinating, really, but not at all her area of expertise. Now, spriggans, she could understand. Well, not so much understand, as such, but they were plant-like creatures. Flirty knew where she was with plants. She turned over the page, back to the start of the entry, and read from the beginning, taking a sip of cold tea, regretting it, then taking another sip.

The quest took Rory to the furthest reaches of the region, up into cold, ice-bound passes where fearsome creatures roamed. He knew this particular item would not be #relevant for the quest, but it had to be checked.

This was the problem with playing the game too long. Too much familiarity.

That alone had saved thousands of lives–possibly millions by that point. Trials were almost complete for a potential Multiple Sclerosis cure; she’d engineered a retrovirus that inserted special genes, ensuring the insulation around nerves was tip-top. Groundbreaking stuff. A year and half ago she’d debuted a tailored set of viruses that could create a biological battery out of muscle tissue. A series of injections under the pectorals, for a couple months… and then you’d have a constant, guaranteed-for-the-life-of-the-patient trickle of power available for all kinds of medical implants–pacemakers, insulin pumps, brain monitors. “Groundbreaking” didn’t begin to cover that. Regulatory agencies around the world were struggling to figure out what a safety protocol would even look like for such an advance.

But even before we reach the negotiation phase, our current contract says any competitive bidder will be disclosed by Paris,” Madison clarified. “In a small percentage of the acquisitions I’ve been involved in, another suitor at the ball has come along and sought to woo the debutante away.”

The empress ensured they had a feast worthy of the Protectors tonight: the noodle broth rich in spices and charred vegetables, sticky rice cakes stuffed with mung beans, purée of cauliflower, quartered bok choy seasoned with garlic and lemon, and a regale of seasonal fruits nestled in a bundle of leaves between jars of juice and dóanqi. Every delicious dish left a sour taste in her mouth.

“I just think it would be best for both of us to keep to ourselves from now on, and only deal with each other when it’s absolutely necessary.” She gave him a stern look. “Yaiaku?” Any semblance of lightheartedness had completely abandoned Kena at this point. He glowered straight ahead, radiating quiet anger, his mouth pressed into a hard line. “You know,” he remarked, “there’s this amazing thing they’ve invented called tact. You ought to try it sometime.” “I don’t need tact. I say things as they are.” “Even if it means telling someone to their face that you want nothing to do with them?” “Would you prefer I lied to you to make you feel better?” Kena scowled. “So you’re not even going to give me a chance? You don’t know anything about me!” “No,” she replied. “And you don’t know anything about me.” “I feel I’m beginning to,” he muttered. “Young gods.” Sister Zu’uvit gestured at them. “It’s time.” Through the doorway, they could hear Xa’aba’s speech building up to the climactic moment when the two of them would step through that door and face the Na’aqal people for the first time. Kena lifted up his hand stiffly, and she took it as limply as possible. Both of them stared straight ahead, bitter and fuming, as they walked forward together. The cheer that went up from the crowd was loud enough to be heard in all Eleven Worlds.

Some of Wesley’s wolf-mother’s were still down here, treasure stolen from the Outerworld and then left to rot in the corners of her den: silk dresses; silver candlestick-holders and twine-wrapped taper candles; trinkets and baubles and gold and silvery jewelry strung from the roots poking through the walls and ceiling; jeweled boxes and jade figures wedged into carelessly-dug alcoves. Owen sat up in the pile of matted, moth-eaten furs where Wesley used to sleep. Still clumsy from the effects of Kenzie’s poison, he rubbed his eyes, seeming sluggish and dazzled despite the low light. Wesley wished they weren’t in Fair Weather, under constant threat--he could have entertained himself with Owen like this for hours.

Owen's guardian is often up to something!*

Thompson (ranger-turned-PI side char) has a quiet little romance arc in the background while the world is crashing and burning.

But mostly I try to just make side characters "look busy" so it doesn't seem like they're standing around for the MCs' benefit.

A new body would not rival his previous form, he had grown rather attached to that one, but it would be infinitely better than his current prison. This weak cage of flesh was wholly unworthy of him. It was only temporary, Redacted reminded himself. The only thing that had changed was the timetable. He was no longer willing to be patient. No longer willing to humor his puppet. He wanted the gem, and he wanted it now. He could stand this only so long. Holding up a soft, pink hand, he watched as ice crystals formed on the surface, steam rising from the freezing flesh. He chilled the hand until the pain was nearly unbearable, any longer and he knew he would lose the limb, then he allowed it to warm again. He flexed his fingers and the thin layer of ice on the surface cracked and fell away. Redacted took a deep breath and calmed himself. As good as it felt to punish this body, it wouldn’t do to damage it, not while he was trapped inside. Later. Until then, there were plenty of human bodies that he wasn’t using. Plenty of suffering to spread around.

In extremely small, precise concentrations.” A flick of her hand, a tiny spark. “I believe they start with a completely pure crystal. They build on it, layer by layer. With chemical baths… and patterns of light.” She got technical, but the others seemed to follow.

She wasn't sure what she'd expected—crystal-clear water lapping at her ankles, warm and soothing, welcoming her with whatever secrets it held on its salty breath. This water was cold. She could tell without touching it. And some small part of her knew that if she waded in, she would never leave. Shrimp slipped his hand into hers and looked up at her. “Well, it ain't exactly what I thought,” she said, watching the gray waves slosh. “But it's still beautiful in its own way, isn't it?”

Mundy presses each of his fingers into the floor, and I watch the clay depress and rebound. “I disagree. I think this might be the first time people expect as much as they can and should from you, D.” He stills his hands, folding them in his lap. “And you ending up here isn’t about your dad. It’s because of what’s in you. Chlo and I always saw it. So did Pops.” My heart warms at the thought of Mr. Connolly. Mess up. Keep going. “I know you’ve always felt like there was something missing because of your family, but…” Mundy shakes his head. “Sometimes, in the absence of something, that space fills with other things. Things that become just as much a part of you. Kind of like…crystallization.” “Aw, Mun,” I say with a careless laugh. “You almost had me until you started talking geology.” But he knows I’m deflecting and only smiles back. “Crystals don’t gain mass from the inside out. They grow when molecules are added from the outside.” He rests his elbows on his knees and looks down, shaking his head. “I know you think that your family is this hole in who you are. And I wish it had been different for you.” A lump rises to my throat. I stare down at my toes in the clay. “But even without it, you’ve been growing,” Mundy says. “Stronger. Brighter. And there’s a lot more to you than you realize.”

"It either works or it doesn't. Let me see." He settled a tremorous hand on Drisal's shoulder, gently as a bird alighting. All that had come before remained, and the cauldron expanded. Drisal reeled in the stew. His heart raced, that heat trickled in. There was no help for his tears, no help for the livid anguish swirling around and filling him. This, this was real. This was right. And much sooner than it seemed, he felt that which gave meaning to it all, which was the meaning of it all. Love, such love amid the grief, entwining with the rest. The light in the room brightened; the CRYSTAL flashed with a promise of golden hues as Rushak finished his assessment. The illusion faded with his words the instant he took his hand away.
