Republicans control every branch in Washington.

Now, Trump is openly giddy about using the shutdown to slash and burn federal resources that working Americans count on.

His shutdown, and firings, will hurt people in every part of this country.

Yeah, SCOTUS has kind of made their bed here. There's no reason for the democrats to give up anything while SCOTUS allows impoundments and recissions.
Also: it makes zero sense to do a "deal" on any spending when Trump has already proven he will impound appropriated money at any time for any reason and SCOTUS has said repeatedly that him doing so is fine
In another era, a group of Republican Senators like Tillis, Cassidy, Collins and Murkowski would join with a handful of Democrats to iron out a deal to extend ACA subsidies and end the shutdown. But in a Trumpified GOP, there is little incentive to do that.

I'm certain that the president is not legally allowed to cut agencies on his own, regardless of what scotus says

We don’t.
Don't take my word for it. Take the word of an expert that knows full well what we are dealing with.

During the government shutdown.
Every single elected government official in the house and senate should lose their pay and benefits.
That includes SCOTUS.
And they should be forced to work every day through the shutdown.

Next Monday's "One First" was going to be about how we should stop covering new #SCOTUS terms through the "big" cases the Court will hear; and instead focus on how the Court is behaving.

Fortunately for me (and you), @dahlialithwick.bsky.social and @mjsdc.bsky.social did it first—and *way* better:
The Supreme Court Will Do Four Things This Term That Tell You Everything You Need to Know

If they do break the law, we can lock them up as long as SCOTUS stays out of the way.
Senior federal officials have quietly counseled several agencies against firing employees while the government is shut down — as President Trump has suggested he will — warning the strategy may violate appropriations law.

SCOTUS is directly responsible for the 'power' Trump abuses and not enough is made of this.

Relatedly, someone really should fund a lawsuit by ppl who got home-invaded, assaulted, and kidnapped by ICE agents without a warrant.

Yes, SCOTUS will throw it out. Make them. Let Roberts and his fellow Republicans on the court tie themselves to this hideous and also hideously unpopular atrocity.
You can't raid and arrest everyone in an entire apartment building, or even legitimately get a warrant to do that, any more than you could for a whole neighborhood. That would be a general warrant. This is the most specific core the-British-did-it-to-us thing the Fourth Amendment is written to ban.
NEW — An estimated 40 people were taken by federal agents in an overnight raid in South Shore, a predominantly-Black neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.

A couple who live nearby said they were shocked to see the enormous militarized raid in their community.
