Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

It's rare for a police officer in Canada to be criminally charged for shooting someone, and then to plead guilty

Andrew Davis shot Devon Fowlin in 2023 and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced on Friday: no jail time and one year of probation

One fascinating and yet expected thing is that none of the big foreign accounts pretending to be American are left of center, or even anti-Trump. Not a single one. Says something about the economics and geopolitics of political grifting
If I’m understanding this correctly, X is owned by a white nationalist who pays poor people of color in developing countries to pretend to be working class white Americans to scare other white Americans into being afraid poor people of color from developing countries are going to ruin America?

Don't trust a New York Times reporter. Don't talk to a New York Times reporter. They are the most ambitious journalists on the planet and will do anything to get the story their editor wants. The truth doesn't matter to them, only getting the story their editor wants so they can move up.
heads up to anyone who holds trans kids near: amy harmon from the nyt is searching for and having a hard time finding people to interview to find out exactly what trans kids are doing when their care is limited or cut off, and for purposes of community safety, please shut the fuck up around her.

I don't think it's even right to say the voting public doesn't care. I think the truth is a lot of voters may generally find trans identity moderately confusing but also *none of their business*.

on the other hand, they find an obsession with harming trans people - say it with me - deeply weird.
Spanberger’s GOP foe spent 57% of her ad budget on anti-trans attacks. Spanberger focused on the economy. You see what won. trib.al/fkMmsR4

The simple truth told time and time again in the polls: The public doesn’t care about trans issues. Voters care deeply about the economy, inflation, & prices.

Ashanty is my student, and this is her first-ever professional assignment! She’s a ridiculously smart thinker and writer — read her on AI in school instead of all the adults pontificating. 🤗
Excited to present this great essay by Ashanty Rosario, a talented young journalist who attends Newtown High School in Queens, about how she's experienced the arrival of AI in the classroom.

"These programs have destroyed much of what tied us together as students."

“The New York Times collaborated with a white nationalist eugenicist hacker and agreed to keep his identity a secret to publish a Zohran Mamdani hit piece” is a way bigger story than “18 year old Zohran Mamdani ticked ‘African American’ on his Columbia application because he was a citizen of Uganda”

The Right really is in disarray because they cannot seem to figure out if they should push “Zohran Mamdani is going to bring Sharia Law” or “Zohran Mamdani treats his wife with too much equality” as a smear campaign, so they are doing both.

I have spoken to rooms full of nondisabled people and heard this ripple of tense laughter. I have told my own story of flipping a car on black ice and people straight up told me they would just drive more carefully.

They can’t handle the idea that you can’t wellness and responsibility your way out.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth just said on Colbert, "We should all live long enough to develop a disability," & the audience laughed uncomfortably.

I can tell you what they were thinking. It was "Not me. That would never happen to me."

& the underlying, unacknowlged premise was "b/c I'm better than that."

Life is random and we are fragile and the sooner nondisabled people make peace with that, the better.

Of course, now we’re five years deep in a pandemic that nondisabled people refuse to try to mitigate because they can’t handle the idea, so I don’t have a ton of hope.

I wish this were only the “RFK” version.

But this narrative is deeply embedded into mainstream medicine and psychiatry.

It’s also a core tenant of both neoliberal (meritocratic health, individual responsibility) and social democratic (bureaucratic biopolitics, psychologisation of health) politics.
The RFK Jr. version of health, where health creates health and healthy people don't get sick and the thing that keeps you healthy is /living the right way/ is very seductive to a lot of people. It also places the burden of illness back on the ill, which decreases the value of human life.

Liberals joined conservatives to mainstream anti-vax beliefs about viruses and public health
Viruses are bad for kids' health. Public health is a collective effort. Liberals no longer believe either.

The best ways to prevent Covid transmission is to wear an N95 respirator or better, ventilate the air, ensure those around you test, etc. Vaccines are a crucial health tool that help prevent severe illness and death *once you're infected*. They're like seatbelts. Which are crucial
