From YA books being rewritten for adult audiences to descriptions talking about how horny everyone in the story is, what is going on in YA literature right now?

I don't have answers, but I have a lot of questions, concerns, and sadness for today's teen readers.

YA Has Entered Its Awkward Adolescence and It's Teens Who Are Losing Out
What is going on with young adult literature right now? Characters are older, stories are steamier, and there are fewer books reaching actual teens.

OVER A MILLION USERS

DISCUSS SUICIDE WITH CHATGPT

EVERY *WEEK*

what the fuck are we DOING here
Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.
I fully believe in the corporate death penalty and believe we would be a better world if OpenAI lost its corporate charter and was forcibly dissolved.

The Check Please Moment: Why Censorship is a Threat to Safe Spaces
We fight censorship not just for intellectual freedom, but for the young person who spends their fall break quietly finding themselves on our shelves.

At least 50 Texas Democratic state legislators fled the state on Sunday in protest to block a vote on proposed congressional redistricting pushed by Gov. Greg Abbott and Donald Trump. State Rep. and union organizer Lauren Ashley Simmons is one of them. She spoke with Teen Vogue about the move:

“But the actions of J.K. Rowling may have rendered that equilibrium impossible. What remains to be seen is whether truly balancing art and commerce as it relates to Harry Potter at this fraught moment is the most magical thinking of all.”
“I want to have a way to be able to love both [the trans community and Harry Potter], and to counterbalance [Rowling].” Well, Breanna, maybe you just can’t have both! Glad @emilyadler.bsky.social asked her about the ongoing Harry Potter collab for @thenext.bsky.social

The way this is so close to a Legends of Tomorrow plot lol
Dave Bautista will finally star in his own rom-com ‘THE ROMANTIC’ after wishing to star in one for years.

The film follows a man who is secretly a romance author named Francine, but he must hire a woman to pose as him at a convention to avoid scrutiny.

Korematsu. Plessy. Dred Scott. Lochner. Curt Flood. Bowers v. Hardwick. The law has moments in history when it has not reflected the lived experiences of people and families who want nothing more than to live healthy, full lives exactly as they are and are meant to be.
🏳️‍⚧️❤️‍🩹🫂 The U.S. Supreme Court just issued a ruling upholding Tennessee's SB1, a ban on gender-affirming healthcare for youth. There will be fuller legal analysis ahead – but right now, we want to send love to trans youth and their families. buff.ly/E5hLb5x 1/4

There is a LOT of reporting on IMLS right now, but it's being done by people who know what it is. The DOE being dismantled is overshadowing this and that's being done INTENTIONALLY.

But anyway, DOGE is in the IMLS offices right now destroying it.

Say goodbye to interlibrary loans + more.
