If we made more than a token effort as a society to be good at things that are needed for the future, instead of constantly fantasising about reopening coal mines and pumping every last drop of oil from the North Sea, while every teenager becomes a plumber, who knows what could be possible?
As Rachel Reeves gives a speech ahead of the budget, a reminder of the global context - in short that in a mature, regulated, inter-connected, developed economy, there's no obvious path to the growth of even the 2000s. And demographic challenges get worse. ecipe.org/blog/the-new...
The New World of Trade – How 40 Years of Change Brought Globalisation Without Trust
Making sense of daily trade policy turbulence has become a major challenge. President Trump is just one part of a complex ever-changing picture.Stop the world to catch up is an understandable respons

Perhaps also you could interview some of those making editorial decisions in the media about whether they are taking their responsibilities seriously?

Maybe normalising sociopathic behaviour was a bad idea?
I know there's a risk of amplifying the fascist horror show, but I think we need to be aware of just how far things are going, especially as this man is a Republican candidate for governor of California. All the old safeguards are being deliberately torn down, and the unspeakable normalised.

MEDIA STUDIES: How the Times bungled its coverage of the OBR report on climate change & UK govt debt
Yesterday's newspaper reported a major shift: "The OBR now thinks…net-zero will have a far more damaging impact on borrowing…"
In fact, the OBR had said the opposite!

Not ‘impossible’ at all! I couldn’t find the data on the day so did a rough calculation from a few different angles, and checked with others. But have asked ONS if they have it.

Keep reminding yourself that everything Trump is doing is completely pointless. In the sweep of modern history, relatively nothing has happened to prompt such an extreme, revolutionary administration.

a regular bugbear of mine - when something goes over budget on costs by 50% it's the end of the world, but you can underestimate the benefits massively and people treat it like a success story. Crossrail was arguably built 20 years too late because of these errors
"TfL’s analysis shows that within a km of an Elizabeth line station in London, the number of new houses is 8-14% higher, and nearly 400,000 jobs have been created since 2015."
A smashing success: it's carried half a billion passengers since opening in 2022.
