The best that could be said for Europe at the end of a tumultuous year is that it could have been worse. My latest for @euractiv.com on how the EU has at least managed a modest tightening of its geopolitical toolkit. But whether that will be enough for the storms ahead is another question

Why the EU's Ukraine loan deal was only a six out of 10 - and how it still might get to 10 out of 10. A guest post for Wealth of Nations by Hugo Dixon, one of the architects of the reparations loan proposal

A guest post by Hugo Dixon, one of the architects of the Ukraine reparation loan plan, on why he rates last week's EU deal as only 6 out of 10 - and why still holds out hope of getting to 10 out of 10

The verdict I was waiting for on the EU summit, and it's largely a thumbs up (and as I suggested might happen, the UK has let the side down).

Quite an admission, basically saying: I have offered my country's vote to a foreign power that sees itself at war with the European Union and am aiding them in dividing us.
💥On his flight to the EU summit, Viktor Orbán revealed what appears to be direct coordination with Vladimir Putin: Hungary would be spared Russian countermeasures if Orbán votes against the EU’s confiscation of frozen Russian assets: "So we Hungarians have protected ourselves."

Very encouraging - but also worrying as Russia and America are certain to intervene to try to keep Orban in power
💥📉 A fresh bombshell poll in Hungary by a reputable pollster shows Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz trailing opposition leader Péter Magyar’s TISZA, 36–53. Despite throwing everything at Magyar in recent weeks, the gap has only widened.

Just four months to go until Hungary's parliamentary election.

Totally ludicrous for the Metreweli to warn that Britain is on the front line against Russia without acknowledging that America, with whom MI6 shares intelligence, is now fully aligned with Russia and has the same objectives. Why are Britain's politicians and craven legacy media not addressing this?

Excellent on the personal threats being made by the US and Russia to stop the existential seizing of the frozen assets, but also spot-on recommendation of the David Runciman podcase with Henry Gee on the decline of humanity, which I listened to by chance on a long car journey & made it fly by.
