One of the worst aspects of the @thetimes.com fake news story is that the paper’s first response was to cover up their shoddy journalism by smearing their source, claiming he had had misled them when their reporter had simply emailed the wrong Bill deBlasio. H/t @maxtani.bsky.social

Very succinct WSJ summary of the staggering migration shock that successive Tory governments inflicted on Britain as they tried to mitigate and hide the economic consequences of the Brexit disaster

Haha. How The Times must have choked on this headline having done more than anyone to spread the non dom fake news which was based on the patently flawed Henley Partners data extrapolated from 200 LinkedIn accounts

The Times has asked an American expat in Lisbon to tell us what Britain looks like if you rely on the darker recesses of the right-wing media ecosystem for your information. Pretty revealing in its way. And not for the reasons Lionel Shriver - or The Times - thinks

I think @robertshrimsley.bsky.social is much too kind to Jeremy Hunt here. In time, Hunt will come to be reviled as second worst chancellor in modern times after Kwarteng. In 1997, faced with similar circumstances, Ken Clarke put the national interest first. Hunt salted the earth. Shame on him

Why were these British billionaires claiming non dom status in the first place? You would think that a serious newspaper would at least ask the question rather than puffing more dubious stats from a self-interested wealth manager

Standing on the top of Helvellyn last week on the clearest possible day, it did strike me as mighty odd that one could not see a single wind turbine in any direction as far as the eye could see. I’m all for protecting the national park, but surely there’s more than enough empty hills to go round?

Sure, but don't underestimate how many ethnically Chinese scientists study at US universities and the efforts being made by Beijing to lure them back, as per my BBG piece below...

I wonder what JD Vance and Elon Musk will have to say about this latest assault on free speech in Britain. Thank goodness we can rely on them to defend our rights

Perhaps Trump heading back to DC early will prove a blessing in disguise. There was speculation beforehand he wouldn't last three days. At least now the G6 plus the leaders of Australia, South Korea, India, Brazil and Ukraine can have a serious discussion about how to save the global order

Good luck to the new South Korean president!

Rushi Sunak’s plan was to come up with a plan to get out of the plan that he had already embarked on (because it was the only legal plan available to him), says Fraser Nelson.

Perfectly encapsulates Sunak’s entire miserable premiership

Troubling to see the WSJ editorial board fully embracing Trussonomics as well as Truss’s own preposterous rewriting of history just as the markets are signalling heightened anxiety about the US debt and deficit

Interesting factoid in Michael Gove’s weekly Spectator highlights email. What could have happened in 2016 to drive so many rich people away from Britain? 🤷‍♂️

Is the world’s first trade deal that leads to one side paying an extra $6 billion in tariffs? Definitely historic

The scariest chart in the world right now. Who is selling US treasuries?

Stephen Miran may just be the second most dangerous man in the world right now. Here he is blaming China for causing the GFC for having the temerity to buy fraudulent US mortgage securities packaged and sold by the bluest of blue chip Wall Street banks and flogged to the whole world. Be serious

Extraordinary. On top of abject surrender in Ukraine and the abandonment of global leadership in virtually every domain, the Trump administration via its university cuts appears to be engaged in long-term unilateral disarmament. Another gift to Russia and China

The real reason why some very wealthy people are quitting Britain. Tax is just one of many factors and far from the most important. From the Wealth of Nations newsletter on Substack. Anyone interested in serious economic analysis should subscribe!
