This is Zephyr. He is a professionally trained bed bug detector. When he recognizes the scent of live bed bugs, he gives an alert by sitting and smiling exuberantly at his handler. We're pretty sure no one has ever been more excited to find bed bugs in their life. 13/10 (TT: emmercrew)

Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents.

A month into my new job, my first real scoop.
Exposing thousands of babies to “a significant risk” of hepatitis B “in a low-income country with limited health care resources” would be “wildly unethical and a disgraceful use of American taxpayer money,” @angierasmussen.bsky.social said.
CDC awards $1.6 million for new hepatitis B vaccine study in Guinea-Bissau. Although the award recipients aren't named, the grant seems tailored to Danish researchers whose work is championed by anti-vaxxers but challenged by mainstream scientists.

Shocked by the awful death of Rob Reiner. I spoke with him for over an hour last night. We talked about his work and his plans for the future. I always enjoyed his company. We met at his Dad's in 1975. Last thing he said to me was "See you next year.." Such a terrible end. Such a sweet man.

You have to keep giving money to avoid collapse and if there’s collapse you have to give more money. It’s called the free market.

Hello new followers. I don’t post much. The thing I’ve done on the internet that I’m proudest of is interviewing a former USAID official about his work on PEPFAR.
It's been a month since Elon Musk decided the U.S. should stop funding for the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). I had the pleasure of interviewing one of the U.S. foreign service officers who helped implement that program. does-helping-help.ghost.io/peter-clouti...

The Lancet published an article on February 7, 2025, on the Trump administration stopping funds for the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The authors write, "Over the past two...

We’ve got goldenrod and aster feeding the bees in October
When I first became a master gardener, I attended a native plants lecture with two takehomes for backyard growers with more limited space--one of which was that goldenrod is one of the biggest bangs for your buck as far as native plants go. Plant goldenrod!

Different Trains
Feeling kind of low today back at work, so to get through the afternoon I'll be posting an occasional thread of my favorite train-related songs.

We'll start with the old Wabash Cannonball, an entirely mythical train until the Wabash RR adopted the name in 1949.

I'm surprised how many people are quick to make a defense of violence in my replies. For them it's necessary, foreclosing on its use is a privilege. For me, non-violence is a powerful tool. It is the lesson of one of my heroes, Bayard Rustin. 1/ wagingnonviolence.org/2022/08/reme...
