and I just like ????? don’t want that in my escapism, first of all, but it’s also more of a jump scare where you do an emotion TO the reader as opposed to going on an emotional journey WITH the reader

which is often a habit young writers grow out of as they get more life experience

"if you're gonna wave your dick around, wave it ALL around!!!!" is actually a flawless description of a common artist bad habit where you deploy the trappings of a raw emotional experience without REALLY Going There. a TV main character's shock death just to generate a big reaction, for example
i think often about this discussion between Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hideaki Anno. it's one of the funniest ways anyone has ever talked about restraint vs self indulgence in art.

Fans of @scalzi.com and @scamperbeasts.bsky.social do not mourn! For I have former foster kitten pics for you!

Names still pending but Violet seems to be winning for the calico.

@kikidoodle.bsky.social spotted in the wild! (Okay fine at a cat show, exactly where you'd expect to find this kind of thing 😂)

“God doesn’t want you to be trans”

God created the platypus, a venomous egg-laying mammal that sweats milk, can sense electric fields, and glows turquoise under UV light

God is not that serious!

Incredible story for science/scifi writers.

This is something I've been working on lately (as a person who is Hella Depressed™️). Maybe we can't fix everything. Maybe we can't fix *anything.* But we can warm ourselves for a moment on the little sparks regardless.
Yes. I do not love the attitude that finding sparks of hope and joy is somehow naive. As someone who was diagnosed with a chronic illness at a young age and has been involved in activism most of my life I can tell you that seeking out happiness is not a luxury, it’s an essential survival skill*.
Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism.

We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive

Omg I need this immediately
THE WORLD WE LEFT BEHIND is out now!

In this worldbuilding game, play as astronauts trekking across an abandoned planet. Draw symbols on playing cards to represent flora, fauna, and vestiges of the past.

What happened to the aliens who called this planet home?

This will now live in my brain

- Orange dragons hanging off a cliff and forgetting to fly
- Orange dragons getting into fights with ice cliffs when they can see their own reflection
- Orange dragons biting their own tails
- Orange dragons destroying a castle by sitting in the wrong place
The problem with the “dragons are just big cats” thing is that means somewhere there would be an orange dragon brainlessly trying to fight a waterfall.

There's an orthodontist's office directly next to the local middle school and every time I see it I imagine what it must feel like to be those guys. Knowing your competitors couldn't buy that kind of advertising with any amount of money, what it feels like to be God's favorite, etc.
