deep mood, but the school system I went through encouraged preemptive binning

they never even taught me long division. my greatest success was turning a grade 10 math midterm 36 into a 52. and then they cancelled my next year's math class so that was it for me

I blame a lot of it on science fiction writers who didn't know what the fuck they were doing, or didn't care

sure, but I presume you're also not in charge of a rocket company and haven't been saying how you'll land people on Mars in ten years for 15 years

personally, since there is *some* valid use case for these as disability aids, I'd at the very minimum want these to only be available by prescription

update: I've seen a video, Musk really does think space is cold

he thinks that all that's necessary is a radiator pointed away from the sun, and clearly that kind of orientation doesn't have to be actively maintained, because it's cold in space

what a fucking dimwit
either Musk is fool enough to think space is cold, or the Financial Times is fool enough to think space is cold

the first would not be surprising but both are ridiculous
This would have been a good point for someone to have asked, is that really how things work? Or is vacuum in fact an excellent insulator? www.ft.com/content/a5cf...

you're right to be mad! it's authorial negligence and it's exhausting

back in the day if you got caught trying to film people on the down-low you'd get dragged into the street and beaten and in many ways i think that's more significantly more civilized than tolerating this shit
cnn.com CNN @cnn.com Β· 1d
Social media is awash with videos of men filming themselves approaching women in public spaces and attempting to flirt. In many cases, the videos are filmed and uploaded without the women’s consent. https://cnn.it/4qtIsvB

Hey folks on here, did I see someone recently (thread? Essay?) posting about how AI is fundamentally anti-consent, in its copyright infringement and its uses for non-consensual imagery, and also its pedagogical uses? I’m looking for a source.

"rationalism" brought us shit like TESCREAL and effective altruism. maybe we should start recognizing that, as emotional critters, emotions actually matter

also because when people say "we should be satisfied with what Earth offers," in my bones i hear them as making an argument indistinguishable from "you should have been satisfied with what the shithole called Barrie, Ontario offers"
February 10, 2026 at 11:54 PM
but in the end, as far as i'm concerned, that line of argument boils down to "i believe it's best that we continue to wallow in mediocrity while we wait for a comet to sweep out of the Oort cloud and teach us how mass extinctions are *really* done"

revisiting this, I actually have to give it credit for its honesty. it states outright the things that other people on its side tend to sidestep. there really is no difference between this and the "Earth is paradise, there's no point going anywhere else ever, and besides it's impossible" people

out of curiosity: is which words are bolded the letterer's decision, or is that in the script, or something else entirely?

fun fact; we were going through all the hoarded stuff at my great uncle's house and we found an incredibly racist 1965 menu from some vanished Atlanta landmark, and my mom's like "that was one of the only restaurants in town." And no, it WASN'T "Aunt Fanny's Cabin." Which was in Smyrna, not Atlanta
half the upscale restaurants in Atlanta in 1965 were fake plantation kitchens with racist mascots, the other half was Lester Maddox's chicken place where he'd keep black people out with an axe handle, and the Varsity, where everybody kept their racism in check for Frosted Oranges

i never can and never will get past the idea that putting no end of important stuff on your phone is a terrible mistake

like, all the people I saw boarding the GO bus with their Presto cards in their phone, or their credit cards in their phone, or...

if you think technology isn't required to survive on Earth, I heartily encourage you to endure a Hamilton winter naked
February 10, 2026 at 4:11 PM
if Earth is such a "paradise" then why does it require technology to survive here? why the fuck does a "paradise" come with smallpox and rabies and screwworm?

when it comes to politics that aren't matters of life and death, I'm certain that I'm most likely to start fights over terrachauvinism

primarily because I regularly have to restrain myself from starting fights about it on Bluesky
