it occurs to me that the gym of a spacecraft that experiences microgravity is a great source of malfunctions and maintenance demands that are annoying but not immediately dangerous

Sciency Lord of the Rings, so instead of Gollum sinking in the magma, the density of molten rock doesn't allow for that, so he plummets and slowly burns atop of it, screaming and holding the ring, which takes forever to reach a smelting point, so now it's just increasingly awkward for everyone.
