It’s a few days after learning that the University of Nottingham will be suspending student intake for 48 courses – including all of Modern Languages where I’m partly based for my PhD work – and will likely close down these courses entirely, and I’m still just so angry and sad and in disbelief (1/7)

On my way home after three amazing days of #LavLang31. Another fantastic edition with a fomo-inducing programme filled with impossible choices, and a great unofficial social evening programme to get a taste of what Manchester has to offer. It's an incredible privilege to be part of this community 💜

I’m travelling to Manchester for #LavLang31 today, to present a paper that is strikingly relevant right now. In two months, there are national elections in the Netherlands. On Thursday, I present my study on the representation of trans rights in the previous elections. A short teaser:

So I did a thread for #TransDayOfVisibility a few years ago on Twitter but with how things are going for trans people currently I think it’s time to share it again here, updated with my experiences since. Bear with me for a long thread (I have a lot of thoughts OK) 1/20

I agree with the observation that English is becoming a "smaller" language with Brexit and American isolationism. Which means Europe and the world need to embrace linguistic multilateralism more than ever: language skills and metalinguistic awareness are a vital public investment for the future.

A cis Black woman was chased out of the women’s bathroom of the RUSD meeting in Riverside last Thursday for being a “transgender in the wrong bathroom” in case you hadn’t heard.

In case it was unclear where this was going all along.

Bill Labov died this morning. I'm not coherent enough to talk about how important and influential and brilliant he was. I am very sad.

I was so lucky to know him, and I am grateful every day that he (and Gillian, and Walt, etc) built an academic field where kindness is expected.
