Daron Acemoglu is not surprised that so many voters ignored warnings about the threat Donald Trump poses to US institutions.

The world’s richest 1% have more wealth than the bottom 95% put together, according to Oxfam.

There is no moral justification for this extraordinary level of inequality.

It's distorting politics, rigging our markets, and granting unprecedented power to a handful of people.
World’s top 1% own more wealth than 95% of humanity, as “the shadow of global oligarchy hangs over UN General Assembly,” says Oxfam | Oxfam International

Just as I predicted!
Right after election, voters views on "THE ECONOMY" suddenly flipped

Republicans who said economy was "getting worse" has dropped from 82%-->59%
Vice versa for Democrats: percent "getting better" dropped from 63%->46%

Yet NOTHING'S CHANGED.
Biden's still President.

President-Elect Donald Trump will move to put tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico until they meet demands to halt illegal migration and the flow of drugs, he posted on his social media Truth Social yesterday.

Here's what to know about tariffs:
What Are Tariffs?
U.S. Presidents Trump and Biden have both turned to tariffs to support local industries amid economic confrontation with China. Here’s how these taxes work and how they’ve been used historically.

A key comparative lesson of elections across the world in the last few years is that ~all incumbent leaders -- left and right, populist and not, presidential and parliamentary, democratic and sorta democratic -- all get hammered when there is inflation.

No reason to believe Trump will be immune.
If tariffs are implemented, prices will rise. And then they will need someone to blame: and you had better believe that they won’t blame the people who implemented the tariffs.

Musk has now threatened the leaders of Canada,Brazil, Germany. X helped create a riot in the UK. Now it seems he doesn't want the UK to make its own legal decisions. Time to act?
"He asked why British far-right figurehead Tommy Robinson had been imprisoned at all. Musk also approvingly shared Robinson’s documentary to his more than 200 million followers"

Musk's interventions should be taken seriously. The ideological leanings of oligarchical media barons can affect us all.

Our paper on trust and trusworthiness is out, where we test a model of competence, benevolence, and integrity in 5 countries. We find these are generally consistent across people and countries, with benevolence being most important in determining trust judgements.

With how the seasons of USC and Nebraska have gone, a game full of odd bounces that came down to the last second seems appropriate.

Thankfully, USC played one of the only teams that the football gods appear to hate more than us currently.

More and more of my students are showing interest in QC independence.

While the polling numbers aren't there yet, I agree with Wells that a Poilievre win followed by a PQ win could pave the way.

Can the (federal) Liberals or CAQ get it figured out? Can the (provincial) Liberals mount a challenge?

My first impressions:

1) it is great not to be inundated with trolls,
2) I'm seeing far fewer posts that make me want to throw my phone against the wall.

While this seems lovely, my fear is that it will ultimately serve to increase polarization and to distract from everyday problems people face.

It feels like the first day at a new school.

Nervously looking for somebody, anybody I know.

Hoping to make new friends.

But totally expecting that I'll be talking to myself (is that the ultimate echo chamber?).

Well... you only get one chance at a first impression.
